As someone in his 20's who doesn't go to bars, this is a real blow.

I loved going to the theatre to see a new movie that isn't on digital at the same time. The comfortable leather seats, the giant screen that takes up the majority of my vision, and a fantastic sound system that's impossible to replicate at home? Loooove.

Watching these new movies on my laptop or my tiny 60" TV across the living room is going to be a joke.

Not just talking about this year. This has been a many years thing. AMC kept buying and opening multiplexes. Adding in IMAX and Dolby sound theaters, spending more and more money. They took over Odeon Cinemas, UCI Cinemas, and Carmike Cinemas in 2016.

I will just keep using Sears as an example. Expanding and not changing your business model is a fools path.

I get the reality of the world right now, but it's super disappointing that I likely can't see In the Heights, Dune and the Matrix 4 in theatres as I don't know if they will reopen by then.

It was timing that factored into that deal.

Remember at that time, it looked like there was still a chance for theatrical distribution to return to some kind of normalcy in the summer. Now theaters/studios have to accept that things have changed for quite a while, and perhaps forever (I recall right before they closed, the Regal in Long Island wasn’t playing Universal movies like Come Play and Let Him Go, and what were they doing just holding onto older titles rather than those movies which may have brought some business even if the theatrical window was shorter).

Don't be surprised if the international market (hell, some of the US as well) go on a pirate spree, if MAX isn't available globally soon.

Although, that looks to be the plan, to expand, because WB can't just drop 17 films for the US to watch on a streaming service legally.

Yeah, what film fan wants to see content from Scorsese, Lynch, Cuaron, Fincher, Del Toro, and Greengrass, right?

Yes, but they were not making more money. They were attempting to corner the market and get fat. While they were doing it their stocks plummeted, because what they were doing had no long term sustainability.

Until it isn't.

They may very well shift some films back to theatrical only in 2022 (The Batman being the obvious candidate).

No, there isn't.

The only thing "temporary" about this will be the "included at no extra cost with HBO Max". By 2022 they will have a VOD purchasing tier (like Disney did with "Mulan") and start charging more for it (as they should, I have no problem with that).

They are sending a huge movie direct to Disney+ this month with Soul. And seems likely they will also send movies such as Cruella and Peter Pan to the service.

Have only so far held off on Black Widow and Jungle Cruise which they view as potential blockbusters, and I imagine if the WB experiment proves successful they will follow suit.

Wasn't the Batman already pushed back to 2022 anyways?

There will be a market for prestige theatrical venues - large screens and/or dining theaters. The theatrical model will shift to cater to the specialized boutique experience rather than the multiplex.
