It's funny seeing that the Japanese dialogue when accurately translated by the new subtitles doesn't bare much resemblance to what the characters translate it as.

So one of the special agents asks Okumura in Japanese how his work is getting on, then when Okumura translates for the police chief (yes, the camp qusling is NOT an interpreter for once!), he says he was asked about the trouble posed by the martial arts schools!

He would make a fairly seamless replacement host on one of Bruce Forsyth's game shows.

That finger-nails on a chalkboard Melvyn Hayes/John Fielder style voice is at least appropiate for once - too often one heres it coming out of Lung Fei or Hwang Jang Lee!

Watching it again, I just realised we never find out who the traitor is who tips the Japanese off a) to the rebel arriving from Shanghai, and b) who alerts them that the Jing Wu school is harbouring rebels. For that matter, who organised the assasination attempt on Okumura and for what purpose? Is he in charge of the town (both the captain and the general seem to defer to him) or just a local karate bully boy?

Too many characters and subplots, but no resolutions!

Next time there had better be a three-way commentary! Kung Fu-PangYau-Meteor!

Yeah, not my idea of ASMR.
Looks like I gave it 4/10 once, so it's gone up in my view! - https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/for...hp?f=19&t=6736

Funny enough, Mike Leeder tweeted about getting me, him, Arne, and KF Bob on a four way commentary... and he suggested Fantasy Mission Force. I think it would just turn into RiffTrax at that point

I wouldn't say no to a BD of Fantasy Mission Force!

Or Island of Fire for that matter - rewatched the HKL last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

While not essential, I'd still pick it up. However I want Magnificent Bodyguards and Half a Loaf of Kung Fu (which to my knowledge has yet to see an English friendly release in widescreen) first.

Yep, I'd take those as well. I imagine there is a good chance for Island on Fire given the fairly recent release by Koch Media.

I would also like to see Twin Dragons and Police Story 3, but I fear that might be hoping for a miracle. Hmm, could there be a chance of Who Am I on a limited run?

Magnificent Bodyguards would be interesting, but I would love to see it get a 3D blu-ray treatment, as well as "old school" blue/red anaglyph style and a standard 2D version. I actually have the Japanese 3D laserdisc which is a bit rough, lol.

But 88 already released Miracles.

Joking aside, I'm not sure what the status of Twin Dragons is... seems to be a Fortune Star title (don't see why it wouldn't be), but that one seems to get lost in the shuffle of JC's early 90s films. Police Story 3 may come down to the never ending red tape from Miramax.

This one also seems to have weird rights issues... stuck somewhere between Sony and Warner Brothers, AFAIK.

I'm starting to wonder if Jackie was behind the chopping down for the Cantonese version - not only has all of Lo Wei's scene gone despite him still being in the cast-list, but the shots comparing Jackie to Bruce Lee have all vanished too!

It went back to HKFDG (at least for a decade now), though I don’t know what the situation is with territories.

I had a feeling that's why that one seemed to be an odd man out... All the hands involved in the making of it and such.

I read sometime ago prior to the release of Who Am I that they shot lengthy scenes for the movie and that it was scaled back. It would be interesting to see what JC would have added and whether the film still exists for there to be a more complete version made available.

At one point they toyed with the idea of releasing WAI pt1 and pt2 because they shot so much in Africa but scrapped that plan eventually. As much as I'd love to see more stuff, I know that Jackie is against showing longer cuts because a lot of that stuff landed on the cutting room floor for a reason. From that point of view, HK cuts are technically Jackie's director's cuts.

Never seen new fist of fury but it's on my xmas list.
Is it a remake of fist of fury or a sequel? Since Jackie was in the original as a student, it would work as a sequel

Jackie just happened to be an extra in the original (unrelated to his character in this sequel).

I gave New Fist of Fury a spin last weekend and I was actually positively surprised how good it was!

I watched it years ago and didn't enjoy it but now, with the restored picture and correct subtitles, I really had fun watching it. It really helped knowing more of the background to the film and the booklet was a great source of information.

I would say that in terms of the storyline, it's probably one of the better Lo Wei efforts with Jackie. Just don't expect wall to wall fighting because the film takes its time to unfold and give weight to all elements of the plot. I watched the original, long cut and it nicely plays as drama building up to Ah Lung's transformation into someone who wants to stand up against the Japanese oppression. Nice little nods to the first film like Ah Lung stealing Bruce's nunchakus but nothing over the top. Chen Sing was very impressive as a baddie and the final fight had some really cool moments. And to top all of that Brandon's and Kung Fu Bob's commentary is the bomb! Thanks 88!
