Not just Nolan, but sounds like Denis Villeneuve and Jon M. Chu are furious too, but are not speaking publicly about it because they still have to promote their movies. I feel like this might be a studio tuning disaster, as their decades long rep for being talent friendly is gone overnight, and I can’t see how making this decision without consulting talent and partners (sounds like only one of the high level executives wanted to do so and she was blocked), or just hoping Disney will follow suit with no indication of their plans, can be anything other than colossally ill advised.

AT&T PREDICTED TO SELL OFF WARNERMEDIA, DC COMICS

It's predicted that AT&T may sell off WarnerMedia at some point, which could include DC Comics that is owned by the company.

AT&T is the parent owner of WarnerMedia, with WarnerMedia including properties such as Warner Bros. Pictures, HBO, DC Entertainment, and DC Comics.

Following the big news that all of the Warner Bros. Pictures movies will be released on HBO Max, CNBC published a report, "Inside AT&T's WarnerMedia as it dismantles the old Time Warner to battle Netflix."

Regarding the potential sale of WarnerMedia, the article states present and past employees are optimistic that AT&T and WarnerMedia can get things right with HBO Max, but at the same time, it's noted many of those same people think AT&T will eventually divest itself of WarnerMedia in order to bump up its stock (which is currently at near a 10-year low):

Still, many of those people predict AT&T will eventually sell off WarnerMedia, either in pieces or together, because legacy media assets will continue to weigh on AT&T's stock rather than help it. Several said AT&T's board will ultimately balk at giving Kilar the money he needs to compete with Netflix, Amazon and Disney.

I used to like Nolan and I did appreciate Tenet coming out (not in the US) since nothing else did, but the sheer inflexibility of his demands was ridiculous.

Tenet wasn't that good, and though I appreciate it over the same Marvel shite being shovelled out, to assume that people would come out in a pandemic to embrace his film...well, that just says a lot about him and what he thinks of actual people.

It probably didn't help he also insulted us for not understanding his idiotic sound mixing/editing (not sure the right term) when there are many unintelligible parts of the movie.

I think the general public will be on the side of Warner's. People still believe that they can pirate for free and that it is their right, so why would they not embrace the studio trying to offer a movie at home during a pandemic? The lustre of celebrity has diminished significantly over the course of the last year too, so not many will shed a tear for Hollywood.

Still, it was stupid of Warner's to make a unilateral decision even if I think it's actually a good step forward. I'm not sure how Hollywood expects to continue over the next year when America is so incompetent at dealing with covid-19. Out of touch elites perhaps?

I do wonder though, given that Trump's supporters scorn everything deemed liberal, have they just stopped watching Hollywood movies? Pretty much 99% of that industry is Democratic. Do they hate watch?

So you have one side that hates Hollywood and one side that won't go to a cinema in a pandemic - great recipe for success.

Nolan, my man, theatrical distribution is dead for at least another year. This will pass and theaters will still be there. It will take time to come back full steam and it may never be back to where it was, but WB is just trying to get their films seen by audiences, which in the end is the most important thing.

Would the amount of pushback be the same if WM announced all 17 films will show in theaters for 30 days, then in addition, they will be added to HBOMax for 30 days, then pulled to reappear some time in the near future while the films follow their normal window of 90 days before starting their journey on home video.

Theaters will always exist to an extent. The question is: Will things go back to the ways there were? Not likely at this point. Theaters is likely to become a niche and your children's children will make fun of this fact.

With the current industry whining about WB they won't follow suit.... yet.

I doubt the filmmakers of those films appreciate losing theatrical release, but that's the breaks right now.

WB may be too far ahead of the curve and that may irk filmmakers, but any studio that survives this pandemic (no guarantee any of them do, even Disney), is gonna be somewhere talent needs to go to make their projects.

They have survived two World Wars, a worldwide pandemic, The Great Depression, Television, The Foreign Invasion, The Great Recession, The Wall Street Invasion. They will survive the COVID-19 Pandemic. Only this time the landscape will look much different than it did in December 2019.

If this experiment of D1 streaming / theater fails I would say its more likely the top gets chopped off the 3 headed monster and new management is brought in to smooth things over with directors before a sale is done. However if HBOmax gets a ton of subs then well its likely Warners is ahead of the curve.

The rumor I heard was that Disney will announce the Mulan PVOD tally and they are so pleased with the results, they will do it again with Black Widow only this time it will be $19.99. February/March time frame.

I think the safer prediction is that multiplexes will soon be a thing of the past. The theatrical distribution model has basically been only focused on blockbuster and event releases the last few years, causing romcoms and dramas to largely be released on streaming platforms.

I believe IMAX and Dolby Vision auditoriums will still be around in upcoming years, but it's possible theaters in general could revert back to how they were in the 50s and 60s. Have one or two auditoriums with large screens and features, and maybe one or two more smaller auditoriums.

The days of having 15 to 20 movies playing in theaters simultaneously has likely come to an end.
