Mine just arrived. Technically I'm working right now but that's not going to stop me from watching it.

It looks great. Definitely an interesting watch due to the damaged elements (the movie is prefaced with a message alerting the viewer that the original negative was destroyed and the transfer is based on an interpositive) but that didn’t stop it from being one of my favorite releases of the year. The Beastmaster is one of those movies that is instantly recognizable to me due to how many times I saw it on TV as a kid, but I’m not sure that I ever really sat down and watched it from start to finish. I bought this as a curiosity, but man, it’s a really good movie!

ha, i never realized the version i had taped as a kid was a TV broadcast until i watched my cousin's copy that had all the extra violence & nudity and i felt completely ripped off! haven't seen this in so many years it will be interesting to see how much i really remember

Why did they specify this at the beginning? It's a useless and redundant warning. Not all the HD transfers come from the original negatives. It's not like they upscaled a VHS!

I'd love it if they did stuff like this on every movie.

LMAO, personal opinions be damned, it's just that they did not need to point at that IMHO. We already knew about it anyway and the release is perfect the way it is. No disclaimer required.

The disclaimer is there for the people that aren't as "in the know" as the folks on this forum. Not everyone that collects/enjoys these films are obsessive as about it as any of us shockingly enough.

That's true.

But I guess that many 4K transfers out there come from interpositive analogue masters anyway.

To be fair, this IS VS we are talking about here. They try to do everything from the OCN unless it's destroyed or impossible to locate and if they have to use an interpositive or any other elements beyond that they usually mention it in some form.

On the other hand, I think that this 4K master will look gorgeous, "despite" it's not coming from the OCN.
In my personal opinion, disclaimers are needed when you use workprints or analogue masters inferior to interpositives.

I concur for the most part. In this instance it seems fair of them to be open and honest about the source material rather than having people potentially raise a stink about it online.

On the other hand, I see where you're coming from. They just seem to be covering all of their bases on this one.

I wish that major studios who keep ****ing around with their new transfers would be so honest. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, this was supervised by the director blah, blah, blah...but look. This isn't going to be anything like what you remember seeing in the theater, but deal with it and keep in mind that movie forum threads will be closed if you complain. Thanks, and enjoy!"

I can appreciate why VS added the notice. There are some really rough looking shots and this is a 4K release that is probably going to attract new customers to their brand. And it will also be attracting a lot of new "youtube" type folk to their releases, and really it wouldn't surprise me if that is exactly who they are aiming for with the disclaimer, if you want to call it that. It's basically a big sign just for those doofs who would start knocking points off their review score for anything that makes it seem like it wasn't shot yesterday.

oh, what would ever stop them really?

isn't there a massive book included w/ this release. i'd think all that info would be quite at home printed there for the real nerds. if so, this disclaimer would indeed be redundant.

That's a fair point but you know how people are. They'll complain if there's nothing telling them about it and heaven forbid they read a thick ass book wherein that information might also be gleened from. This isn't the 90's.

I'll put it this way--I don't think anyone will question why VS added the notice after they've seen the disc for themselves. There are regularly issues with grain and damaged elements, among other anomalies. But again, I loved how it looked. There was nothing in this transfer that distracted me or bothered me as much as what we have been getting from a lot of recent releases that are processed, however "tastefully" so. I love movies that look like movies, and while watching The Beastmaster there was no doubt--this is a movie's movie.
