I watched this last night on Netflix for the first time.

Quite frankly I thought there was some pretty blatant veiled racism and sexism in some of the scenes set in Africa and Hawaii that was embarrassing.

Bruce Brown may have been an innocent product of another time when political correctness didn't exist...but it was still offensive imo.

Also most of the narrator's attempts at "humor" were ineffective and lame.

What's good about the film is the photography, some of the music...and that's about it imo.

It was the 60's, there was no political correctness BS back then.

A new BR of this is now announced for the UK. Anyone know if it has any extras?

The drag has always been that the BR has crap, in terms of Bonus Extras, while the DVD Set that came out just before the BR, is LOADED with cool stuff.

I'm of Two Minds about this. There is some fairly Bigoted silliness in a lot of stuff from this time... but it's the way it was, and I think it's silly to try to "correct" that by re-editing-and-stuff to "Protect" others.

On the other hand, as much as I'm not a fan of "Political Correctness," I think that people that complain about "Political Correctness" are sometimes people that don't want other people to claim that their blatant Bigotry is Bigotry.

I love this film. When i was a kid, Bruce used to drive up and down the Coast of California and show his little short Movies in High Schools and Colleges.

I also think the "Humor" is a nice and innocent example of the Times.

I'm very pleased this film is getting a UK release, but it does once again prompt my recurring question... Where is Big Wednesday?

It's an absolute classic, and I'm stunned it still doesn't have a release.

I too remember Bruce's traveling show. Saw "Endless Summer" in Point Loma High School's auditorium with the man himself narrating.

Wow. Cool. I grew-up in a sleepy little coastal town just a mile or so south of San Francisco - Pacifica. He used to show them in our School Cafeteria at night and occasionally at our crappy little Seaview Theater on odd Nights or Afternoons.

FYI: Very Cool UPDATE!!!

I never picked up the Blu-Ray because there was a Special Edition DVD that was released at the same time - which was really odd - and I didn't wanna spend more for less. And I forgot about the poposed UK Special Edition Release - until a few weeks ago when I accidentally found that fairly new Import. It looks like it has all the Special Features as the Special Edition DVD. Just got it. Very Groovy!

For anyone looking for this, you can still buy it directly from the distributor:

https://montereymedia.com/search?q=endless+summer

EDIT But it looks like they are now out of stock on the US blu-ray.

That looks like the Old Version. It doesn't say it has all The Special Features of this one:

This is the one with all the Features:

That's the UK import, but it should be region free for the main feature (no idea if it has PAL or 50i special features). The DVD with it is more than likely PAL if it matters.

I don't think there's a American Version with all the Extras...

And, Yep, just checked... It says "REGION FREE" on the back. Dunno about the PAL thing...

The DVD was released before the BD. I have both.
I didn't see hardly any picture quality difference between the DVD and BD.

I don't think a 4K would make Bruce's 16mm stuff look much better. I think the Blu-Ray sorta-kinda did, but I think 4K is a bit of a stretch.

But it would be awesome just to have a nice set of Bonus stuff, like the follow-up, Endless Summer II...

A few discs of Bonus Extras would be easy. Bruce had so much stuff. Shorts like Slippery When Wet from '58; Surf Crazy from '59; Barefoot Adventure and Surfin' Shorts from '60; Surfing Hollow Days, '61; Water-Logged, 62... and those are just his released early shorts.

I remember being in High School and watching him do his cool little presentation of 8mm and 16mm bits. He would put on a 45 of some sorta-semi-surfin' tune and play it while he narrated. I loved it<

Necropost, but I managed to get the Monterey Video BD of this for fairly cheap, which is nice because its seemingly OOP and now pretty pricey as a result. If I want more special features I'll just track down the Special Edition DVD sometime later.

It doesn't really matter to me anyways since I can just rip it using MakeMKV, but it claims to include a digital copy. Anyone who got that release new, how did the digital copy work? A code on their site or something like that? It doesn't seem to be Ultraviolet, and the listing on the site claims the digital copy is on the disc. Hmm.

Edit: For those who access this thread in the future, it turns out the digital copy files are literally IN the Blu-Ray itself, no codes to redeem or anything. You're supposed to access them using a BD-ROM drive on your PC or however other way you can directly access the files on the disc, of which you have two SD versions, one encoded for iPods of the time and the other for PSPs. DRM-free too! Doesn't really matter at this point since I can make an HD digital copy by ripping the disc, but it's still interesting to see.
