region free titles a advantage with blu-ray yes/no - Blu-ray Forum

is it just me or are we at an advantage now with a lot of blu-ray titles being region free i cannot remember such a time when so many films were available on one format that were region free i now no longer need to wait so long for
films to be released i can just import. of course i know a lot still is locked but might there be a time down the line where the studios get rid of the region locking

what do others think" am i wrong or is it more strict than ever??

I think you are correct that there are more region freedom with BD compared to DVD. I think the studios start to realize that they can make theire buck today and not tomorrow with region free titles. As a European movie lover I think region freedom is a very important thing.

I'm all in favour of region free when it means I can get Blus that aren't available in the UK. For instance, I got the 5 disc version of Blade Runner from the US because all that was available in the UK was the 2 disc version. The one from the states was also cheaper even including postage!?

Definitely a good thing. Can't see any downside to it, and I import pretty frequently.

The other night I sat down to watch my UK copy of 'How To Lose Friends and Alienate People' while my american buddies who love Simon Pegg can't do that. Next month, I plan on getting 'Neverending Story' for my sons (they loved it on HDNET Movies!) from the Netherlands because it's not here.

While a lot of movies eventually get released, for a lot of them, there's no waiting involved. Good times.

Your right there are alot more region free films out on bluray. Im suprised about that. But it's a good thing, if there is a uk version of... lets say underworld thats been encoded in MPEG2, where as the US version has been given the full MPEG4 treatment. Then i know I'll be importing the US version!

Region free disks can only help with the uptake of blu. I just wish the studios would make the releases consistent. MPEG 2 for UK, MPEG4 for US. Special features could also be the same.

Thank God not everybody is playing the "Region code game". The catalog is bigger, and as some have pointed, you can even choose what Blu is better for you, if there's is more than one of the same movie.

That Region Code game is a losing game anyway. With DVD's it became completely a moot point when there were many Multi Region players available. If some companies insist in keeping their blus locked, in time there will be enough multi-region players to watch whatever you want.

So...DEATH TO THE REGION CODE !!!!

Region free is a very good thing, it gives people a lot more choices and options for their Blu-ray libraries which is always a great thing!
