I always thought it was a joke (which it clearly is) and never read into it or paid much attention to it until people started bringing it up. I’ve seen people extremely offended by it which just baffles my mind.

You know that phrase "It's funny because it's true." and how it became more and more popular as TV became saturated with lame observational comedy (e.g. "Don't you just hate when you go to get your car keys and you can't remember where you left them.", "You notice how you wait an hour for your wife to get ready to go out and then she tells you to hurry?",)

I reckon there's now a generation of lame-os that assume all jokes need to be at least partly truthful in order to have been uttered at all in the first place. They cannot grasp an intentionally absurd or false statement being the basis of humour. . So it's no wonder they feel they need to ask if it's a joke.



There's also the assumption that a joke told by the person in the film needs to be funny or its not clear if it's a joke.

But there's also people who just want to impress others with their principled stance on not ripping the clothes off underage girls.

If you explained that scene to fifty Generation X'ers, I'm sure some of them would find it weird. The actor might have mixed up the names and they didn't care enough to fix it after.

You'd have to be really stupid to assume the actor said the wrong line and they left it in. Like you'd have to really not make the effort to think past your own sense of propriety. You'd have to assume that the filmmakers either didn't notice the error. Or they noticed it and thought. "Hey. Tearing the little girls clothes off. That's funny. Wish I'd wrote it."

For pete's sake. Bob and Lynda are only at the Wallace house for one reason. But in order to do that they need Annie to make Lyndsey disappear or keep her out of the way. Bob is simply making reference to the precarious nature of this arrangement in a drunkenly crass way a teenager might do so.

I hate to use this term but any soul searching expressed regarding this line just sounds like virtue signalling to me. So pat yourself on the back if you don't think Bob is funny cos it's true.

People have been conspicuously tugging their forelocks about that line (on internet forums) for the past fifteen to twenty years.

I can't think why people would feel the need to think "solemnly" about that line except that they're keen to let people know they don't endorse ripping under age girls clothes off.

This film has four murders in it. Not joke murders. Actual murders. I've heard plenty of people express their delight and enjoyment of this and never heard anyone wonder aloud if it was a mistake, considering that murder is a horrible, iniquitous evil.

If there's anything to consider with solemnity it's the fact that Lynda dies thinking her boyfriend is the one that is strangling her. Not what a drunk geek says to his girlfriend about the logistics of boning in a strangers house while their friend bsvysits the owners daughter.

Why would you not think about the context? Maybe if it's because you're preoccupied with reacting in that way to things that it's current to appear righteous about.

Yeah I know that. I've been arguing that nobody genuinely thinks that it was a mistake. They are just using it to express their principles.

Considering how it easy it is they would have checked themselves if they were giving it any more serious thought than just thinking it aloud for the benefit of others.
