![]() ![]() What’s up with North To Alaska? Is this OOP? From what I see, it’s unavailable on Amazon, and is only being sold by 3rd party sellers, starting at $52 ![]() When did his happen and why? I like the movie ( it’s fun) but I don’t understand why it might be OOP of all the many Wayne movies on Blu-ray ( Quiet Man Olive Signature edition also appears OOP). Luckily, you can still get North To Alaska as part of the 7 disc John Wayne Film Collection set. |

Sadly it's a victim of the Disney invasion and murder of 20th Century Fox's home media department.

The Train Robbers Blu-ray arrived today for me from the states. It has a VUDU.COM Digital code for the film. It says it must be redeemed by 6/2/18 but it might still work. Anybody want it as I can’t use it here in the U.K. First to message me gets it.

The box set is quite expensive, especially to import to the U.K so it will have to wait till next month. I’ve got two of the 7 films anyway. I’ve also found The Olive Signature Collection version of the Quiet Man on Amazon.UK for £30 plus postage. Is that worth it for the price which will probably be near £40 said and done, about $53.00 for one film. Last edited by Bourne1886; 01-11-2021 at 10:46 AM. |

I found it on Amazon.co.uk but it's the German version for £9.00. Luckily it’s got English subs and soundtrack. It’s still a 20th century fox release so I presume it’s got the same transfer etc? |

So I’ve finished watching The Train Robbers and War Wagon and they are both terrific films. I enjoyed everything about them. Just wish they had a few more bonus features. War had none unfortunately. Picture and sound was easily a 4 out of 5.
Easily some of his best films. Ann Margaret was just delightful in TTR. I’m still waiting for Cahill. It’s been delayed according to the shipping and Amazon have apologised for it not arriving on time. I hope it’s not lost as I bought it through a 3rd party seller fulfilled by Amazon as they aren’t selling it anymore. I haven’t watched They we’re Expendable yet. So the next films I will be looking at tracking down will be Brannigan,McQ and The Quiet Man all on Blu-ray. After that maybe North to Alaska. Still haven’t got round to buying She wore a Yellow Ribbon or Fort Apache as importing is getting expensive but I guess there’s no other choice. One things for sure I’m never disappointed with The Duke’s films. |

Although I really enjoy JW's westerns, I think one of my favorite performances by him was in They Were Expendable. The character he played was one of his more nuanced and conflicted performances. The movie really showcased the wonderful acting talents of Donna Reed (From Here to Eternity) and Robert Montgomery (a PT boat commander in real life during the war) who helped propel the story and added the proper sober tone to the movie. John Ford, already known for his WWII documentary films, pulled no punches about how badly the war was going at this point in time. The movie really has no happy or conclusive ending which although was totally appropriate to the tragedy of the battle, was an anomaly for many war pictures at the time.

Sorry to read that. The last time I was allowed to buy movies in a store, early November of last year, I could still find it here and there. Perhaps I'll look around if they ever lift the "banning the sale of all non-essential items" and see if I can find one or two.

Really enjoying reading your various Wayne movie thoughts and reviews on here! Keep them coming! I too just watched The Train Robbers again for the first time in 2 years. I really found myself enjoying it more than I fist did. I agree that Ann Margaret is great in this. I also like the twist ending. Hope you get to watch Cahill soon. It’s another one I just rewatched in the past 2 years. While not one of my all time favorite Duke movies, I found myself really enjoying it. I really recommend The Quiet Man, Fort Apache and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. Hope you get to see them all soon! |

The Train Robbers is Great isn’t it! To be honest I never saw the twist ending coming. Usually with modern films I spot them a mile off. It caught me off guard for sure. Plus The Duke fell for it too! I really liked Ann Margaret. Did I say that before? ![]() Cahill is now due in February according to the tracking. I love watching his films and as I said before they never disappoint. I don’t think I’ve watched a bad one yet. Although I did find Chisum a bit slow going but still enjoyed it, just not one of my favourites. I really enjoyed The War Wagon and another one of my favs is The Cowboys, along with Big Jake, El Dorado, Hondo, Mclintock, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, The Shootist, The Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit. Next month I aim to track down Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Quiet Man on Blu-ray. The first two I’ll have to import from America. TQM is on Amazon UK for about £10 so that will be easy on the bank balance. I’m so glad I’ve started collecting and watching The Dukes films because they are just so damn enjoyable. I’ve got a few more to get though. Need to get around to watching Stagecoach and Red River as well. They are hard to get hold of over here. At least decent copies. |

Just curious...how did you get to be such a huge Duke fan living in the UK? Is Wayne also pretty popular over there? I also ask because my brother live in London. I live in St. Louis, MO. which is about 5 hours south in the Midwest from where Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa. I was lucky enough to visit his boyhood home and visitors museum in early 2019. So I always find it interesting how fans from overseas get hooked on Wayne. |

For me the first JW film I watched was The Longest Day as I’m an avid WW2 movie fan and it stayed like that for ages and I mean ages. Why I don’t know. I knew who he was and I knew he was famous for westerns but didn’t really know much else about him other than John Wayne wasn’t his real name. More fool me I guess in hindsight! I was only very loosely into westerns because of Young Guns on vhs and number 2 (I saw that at the cinema when it came out with my friends) and my Dad was also into Clint Eastwood westerns when I was young and taped them off tv and rented them aswell. So that was my exposure to westerns when I was younger. Slowly after Young Guns I started watching modern mainstream westerns at the cinema and then when they came out on VHS,DVD etc if I liked them I’d add them to my collection. Such as Tombstone, Wyatt Earp etc. In the following years I just kept re watching those ones as I had them in my home video collection and then every now and again I’d add another modern western to my collection when they came out for example 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe. I never really "connected" with the old school westerns that much when I was in my younger years I just kept watching Clint’s westerns every now and again such as Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, Dollars trilogy, Josey Wales, Joe Kidd etc. Then last year I got to thinking about old ‘school westerns’ because of changes in my life for some reason and although my knowledge of westerns wasn’t great I knew that Clint and John were well known in that genre. I’d watched most of Clint’s (including Unforgiven) so I started to look into The Duke’s westerns and in my research/search for his western films I came across The Searchers from articles I read and that was always highly recommend along with others like True Grit and El Dorado. I bought The Searchers on Blu-ray and I was hooked. And to use an old saying the rest is history! I came to John Wayne’s films very very late in life as I’m nearly 50 but I’m glad I did. It’s a shame I was late but I’m quickly catching up. I’ve got 25 of his films in my collection now. I’ve been to America three times (passed through St.Louis on a Greyhound Bus) on the way to Nevada but I’ve never been to John Wayne’s Museum. I used to live in London but moved to Norfolk in the East Of England nearly 20 years ago! How time flies. Now I’ve discovered his films I’m a massive fan and will continue to watch them over and over and discover other films of his. Last edited by Bourne1886; 01-20-2021 at 06:44 PM. |

![]() ![]() Not yet on BD, but it should be. A great (I think) comedy/romance film from 1953. Different for Wayne, but I think it all works. This was filmed the year after The Quiet Man (which is on BD so I can post it here), so if you liked one, you should like the other. |
