Thumbs up The Weinstein Company to support Blu-ray early '07

http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=294

A small studio but they've got some great titles already like the uncut Kill Bill's.

Were they always both formats or what?

Good news, in any event.

Please add them to the Blu-ray support side as well.
Cool - I hope that they decide to release movies as well - Clerks II is a must have

Nope, previously they had stated that they were exclusively HD DVD supporters.

CLERKS 2!!!

I do like picking the winning side. Clerks 2 was the main movie I was annoyed about not getting because I don't intend buying an HD DVD player.

Soon, you will all be mine my pretties: http://www.apple.com/trailers/weinstein/

Wolf Creek is also excellent and you should pick that up right away. Kind of scare you off coming to Aus though.

They probably realized what WB and Paramount realized, it is more profitable to release BOTH formats. Hopefully Fox, LGF, Disney, and Sony (as if that would ever happen) will realize this as well.

I fully expect that Lions Gate and Disney will jump on board with HD DVD shortly. Fox and Sony will never release on HD DVD unless BD crashes and burns... i.e. not too likely it'll ever happen.

Maybe it's just me...but it seems like every day is a new announcement for BD and pretty much nothing (kong & Batman aside) which we knew were comming since the launch.

It's great to see Blu Ray gaining more ground, I just hope I didn't invest in HDDVD for nothin...

well, like has been stated previous...not like my HDDVD's will go up in smoke if they fold.

Universal switches and I'm going to auction my HDDVD collec as a special package deal IF this ever happens.

Sony is obvious, but how do you figure Fox won't?

Fox is supporting Blu-ray exclusively due to their added content protection. HD DVD has openly scoffed at BD's protection saying they have too much of it. Fox loves the idea of no one being able to freely copy and distribute their movies. Thus Fox will not support HD DVD.

I dont think anyone will go HD DVD at all. I only think that people will move away from, rather than jump on with HD DVD, as history so far have have shown: LG abandoned HD DVD, Sun went BD.

So they actually think Blu-Ray is going to be impossible to copy? Haven't they learned that there will always be a way and there will always be someone who will find that way?

I highly disagree with that. Why should a company support one and only make profits on one when they can support both and make profits on both? Right now HD-DVD has proven to be the superior format, and that is what I have people at Best Buy buying more of. We have had so many returns on that Samsung player, gone through two display models, and people see the return item and think, "Why was this returned? I'm not getting something that has been returned several times." Perhaps Sony will get their butts moving and prove BR can be all they say it can be. Until then, HD-DVD is the superior choice. Hell, Sony can't even keep games exclusive to the PS3 due to costs, nor do they want to help the companies that are too small to continue making the PS3 games, resulting in at least 12 games being cancelled so far.

Just remember: Warner has yet to slight BD.

If Batman Begins and Polar Express are coming out on HD-DVD in early October, I'd be willing to bet you these puppies will be on BD for Christmas time.

No reason for them not to be, if trends hold. Warner has been playing this thing very fair and right down the middle.

Unless I've really missed something, CEDIA has been a complete non event for HD-DVD, as I expected. All I've seen is talk about some new Toshiba players being rushed out and not much else.

Doesn't look good for them, long term wise, especially when you have all the makings of the BD sleeping giant getting ready to stir for the holidays.

I very much disagree with your assessment, as well as some others. The question you need to be asking is why would Lionsgate or Disney even fathom supporting both at this point? A: They wouldn't because 50,000 users of HD DVD isn't going to push them into incurring the added cost of supporting both formats, especially with millions of Blu-ray players on the horizon and a plethora of supporting CE companies. Most likely, a lot of studios are waiting to see how the shipments of other Blu-ray hardware is going to turn out, and more than likely come this 4th quarter, it should go rather splendid.

Anyways, back on topic, I think the addition of the Weinstein company is great news. Universal is all we need, then it is game over.

Don't forget: Almost assuredly, just on hype and the name "PlayStation" alone, the PS3 is going to sell out for Christmas a la Tickle Me Elmo.

That's 400,000-500,000 potential Blu-Ray players with instant and sudden market penetration.

What is that? Almost 10 times the number of HD-DVD players out there, give or take?

It's not even close. I know that much.

And as the BD titles' quality continue to steadily improve, all you need is decent percentage of that userbase to say: "Hey, screw it. Let me try out one of those BD discs while I'm at it."

That's all it takes. That's step one.

What does HD-DVD honestly have to counter this effect? Overpriced "second gen" Toshiba players?

The Xbox360 HD-DVD add on?

Yeah, this will help, although this isn't going to have the hype and craziness helping it out like the PS3 most assuredly will.

I guarantee you NOT anywhere even remotely near 400,000- 500,000 Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-ons will sell through the holidays.

They wish!

Whoops, my mistake, as it appears Toshiba only has 25,000 players in homes currently...well, at least from this article, who quotes Toshiba's press blurb...

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/233

That's even worse than I thought. 25,000? This is paltry in terms of what is to be offered this holiday season from Blu-ray backers.

If you're on a certain prominent forum, that number's at least 50,000.

Let 'em have it!

How does even 100,000 look against 400,000- 500,000? And that's just PS3's.

We have no idea how well the big boy hardware is going to sell in addition to those numbers above.

A paultry 25,000 players. Even I'm shocked at how low that figure is.

I guess outside of AVS members practically no one else bought into the format. That's not a good thing in the grand scheme of things. At the inexpensive cost of getting into HD DVD one would have hoped more people would have checked it out by now. This isn't good news for high definition discs in general, HD DVD or Blu-ray.
