Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

I’m so conflicted. Godzilla vs Kong on paper should have me hyped beyond measure and that trailer was undeniably cool, but even though I loved Gareth Edward’s Godzilla I didn’t like Kong: Skull Island and HATED Godzilla: King of the Monsters (which also had amazing trailers) so I feel like I would be dumb to go back for a 3rd beat down from this series.

Weird. For me, Skull Island is the best of the films. Those were the human characters I could relate to most and what made it so compelling was Samuel L Jackson as the villain (presenting us with a villain I could understand and who's scheme was more interesting than the typical "I wanna take over the world" nonsense). Overall it was a fascinating update to the old King Kong story, where we are left with characters far more compelling than the norm for these kind of stories.

With Gareth Edward's Godzilla while I definitely felt for Bryan Cranston's character I felt nothing for his son and daughter-in-law. Cranston was so fantastic and Aaron Taylor Johnson so flat by comparison. There were some good shots of Godzilla, particularly the airport scene (as brief as it was) and the last maybe five-minute battle scene. It's a film I would have to use the "chapter skip" button a lot to get through. It was an improvement over the Matthew Broderick Godzilla thank god but very uneven.

King of Monsters, while flawed, was at least more thrilling than Edward's Godzilla (where the opening and ending were great but everything in between meh..). Though it presented nothing as powerful as the opening of that film, the rest of it was never dull the way that film was either. It was a fun popcorn film that never took itself too seriously while simultaneously never was self-aware enough to stumble into Roland Emmerich territory.

Noticed Kong gives Godzilla two powerful blows in the trailer yet Godzilla doesn't get any hits on Kong. I guess after years of people asking "How can Kong beat Godzilla?" they wanted to show that Kong could win.

Seeing the Legendary Godzilla giving out some city destruction makes me happy. I was a bit disappointed they went with the 'hero' route for Godzilla but learned to love it in KOTM but I'm glad we can see what the other way would be like.

Just saw a TV spot where Kong was holding an ax with a glowing orange light. So here's my theory on how that comes into play.

[Show spoiler]The ax blade is made of one of Godzilla's plates which a missing plate won't allow Godzilla to shoot his beam. So in the fight between K&G vs MG Kong puts the plate back into place allowing Godzilla to shoot an orange beam.

i have had arguments with friends on this topic kongs primate physique alone with similar size should give him huge advantage. but this is of course fantasy so...

an people always brings up the "yea but kong was shot down by planes from empire..." :/

Hopefully brief language is Kong telling Godzilla to f*** off.

They won't be opening anytime soon. Maybe in Orange County, just a few, but I'm not going to anyone's county until this pandemic is over.
