So why did I get a screen full of snow yesterday when the player went back to the main player menu after I stopped the disc? This was on 4:2:2 12bit/deep color off. The second time I stopped the disc it went back to the menu fine but the first time I just got snow and it stayed that way until I closed the tray and let it spin up the disc again, then the disc played fine. Was this a handshake issue? I have resolution set to auto. Maybe I should force it to 4k?

That's not that uncommon, to have a brief handshake when the player is being stopped or just starting. I've seen it before too on occasion (the snow) for a brief half second or so.

But it wasn't brief. It remained a screen full of snow and the player main menu never appeared. Just snow. I left it that way for a couple minutes and throughout that time the screen was just snow. I had to retract the tray for the player to re-load the disc, then the disc menu came up like normal, and when I stopped the disc again, the player screen came up normally.

This never happened once with the x700. I never saw snow for even a brief moment with that player. I could understand if it was a brief flash during handshaking - usually when the player first starts up, I get my generic "no input" screen on my TV for a moment as things switch. But the screen just stayed on snow when it was supposed to be displaying the main player screen.

To me, snow indicates a bad HDMI Cable. Again, I would suggest getting a new one. Get a certified one from Monoprice and you won't have to worry about a thing anymore. If the cable is bad, they will replace it for free!

He doesn’t want to try a new cable. Everyone have suggested this but he’s adamant that there is nothing wrong with his cable.

Ah OK. I missed that part.

Is it a one time thing? If so, I wouldn't worry too much. Quirks happen with electronics, especially when it comes with HDMI handshake. I understand you haven't experienced with your old player and don't believe it's a cable issue...it could just have been a fluke.

Worst case you may have a defective player, but I'd say unless it's a common occurence then just keep an eye on it.

I'm using logic. I've been using the same cables for over a year without a single black screen issue or instance of snow. Now with the new player I've had both issues. And we know the Panasonic has a restriction on it's 4:2:2 output. So I'm just trying to rule out possibilities with the player. I've had the player now for 2 weeks. I have two weeks left for a return and then I'm stuck with it. Considering the current state of shipping, I'd be lucky to get my new cables in times to even plug them into the player before I'd need to return it to Amazon. Unless I paid crazy money to rush them over, if that's even a shipping option.

So I'm trying to do what I can with what I have, to see if I can narrow it down to a setting issue, if that's what it is. It's not like I can just take a quick trip to the store to pick up cables. If it was that easy, I'd try it. But I can't use Amazon since apparently I can't trust their cables so no 2-day Prime shipping (which usually takes a week these days anyways). Again, I have 2 weeks left in my return policy. Last weekend I had zero issues. 6 movies straight with no issues, including Close Encounters which is a complicated disc with triple layers and branching. This weekend I had a couple brief issues. So 2 weeks left to troubleshoot is kind of tight.

Well, I only watched one thing yesterday after I switched the settings to 4:2:2 12bit/deep color off, so it only happened once so far, but that was the first thing I watched after changing the settings and it happened as soon as I stopped the disc. The disc played fine though, not a single issue, but then I watched 6 films last weekend with no issues, and that was at 4:4:4/12 bit/deep color on. This past weekend I had issues with that configuration. So I'll just have to watch some more stuff and see how this 4:2:2/12bit/deep color off configuration works for me.

Amazon sells monoprice cables. Can I trust this cable?

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-115429-Certified-Premium-18Gbps/dp/B07GGYGXK2

It seems to be the same cable as this:

https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_...seq=1&format=2

And I can have it in a couple days. Sold and ships from Amazon. I can buy a 2-pack so everything in the chain would use these cables.

I actually have those exact same cables. They are great cables. I just don’t use them anymore. I now use Monoprice’s non certified 8k/4K HDMI Cables. They are making/releasing a certified cable in February. It’s only good for gaming though. The cables you just bought are perfect for watching movies!

Last thing I would do for your player though is make the resolution at 4K and not Auto. As Geoff said, it helped eliminate handshake issues by doing that.

Name me some high-nit HDR10 discs that really show off the HDR Optimizer on my 800nit OLED. Of all the discs I have tried, I have not found one in my collection.

This was posted by Geoff in another thread last year. Maybe he has an updated "Light Cannon" list?
