Only the heist scenes looked a tad too green. The rest of the new master had superior colors, imo.

So, shall I presume can we expect this 3-hour epic to be squashed onto a BD-66?

Was there ever an extended cut? I have both the regular version and the Director's Definitive Edition on vudu and it says the remaster version is longer then the regular.

Maybe they rounded up when inputting the amount of minutes on the other scan, or the old scan just ran a tad longer at the end (black-out), but there is absolutely no difference in content.

The only difference is that the "definitive" edition is a new scan (a 4K scan), the other one is just an older scan (an HD scan).

It's more than that. I did a direct comparison yesterday with the blu-ray with the old master versus the 4K HDR itunes version. Some of the 4K scenes look too dark and the color looks desaturated. One scene I specifically recall was when Danny Trejo was on a pay phone outside while it was cloudy (approx 1 hour 39 minute mark). The scene looks too dark in 4K HDR (as if the gamma is messed up), his skin tone looks sickly & the color of his jacket looks desaturated, and when I switch to the blu-ray, his skin tone looks normal, the brightness level looks normal, and his jacket looks like the correct color. I'm sure some people on here will argue that the blu-ray is color/contrast boosted, but it looks normal to me. I have the Japanese disc with the old master and better audio - that's the best version in my opinion. I won't be buying the 4K disc if it's the same as the itunes version.

Is the Japanese disc the original VC1-encoded Blu-ray? I have that as well as the Definitive Director's Edition and the old Special Edition DVD. The SE DVD is still my go-to and has the full, theatrical cut of the film (which is different and runs longer). Despite being only 384kbps DD 5.1, I feel like the audio is mixed better on this disc. I think this is the same transfer that came out on Laserdisc when the movie was released.

I've brought it up before, but I don't like the way they mixed the audio on the Blu-rays. The second half of the movie (when Val Kilmer sleeps over at DeNiro's house) sounds like the audio goes wonky and I have to turn it up to hear the dialog, but then turn it down again when the action starts. I always felt like the SE DVD had a better audio mix in this regard.

Anyone else noticed this? Watch the Blu-rays and see if you hear what I hear.

that's interesting and surprising since the echo is so extreme that it almost sounds like delay

if they did use real reverbs I would say they definitely had to beef up the initial shots after since those would have been rubbish on their own, so probably they can just put those reverbs mostly up top. should be interesting to hear.. (likely they would have gone to extreme lengths to record those reverbs once they noticed how cool they were)

I hope they don't mess around with the mix too much though. still the best this movie ever sounded to me was the dvd non special edition mix on headphones hehe. really you could play that scene through a radio and it would still sound great but it does sound even better with some extra compression

.. wish I'd seen it at the theatre. somehow an older De Niro and Pacino movie did not seem very compelling at the time. my loss

I think this is the same transfer that came out on Laserdisc when the movie was released. I have brought it up before, but for some reason on all the Blu-rays, about halfway through the movie, the audio sounds like it goes flat to me. I think it's just a problem of how they mixed the audio on the Blu-rays. I also have to use the DRC (dynamic range compression) when watching because I can't hear the dialog and if I turn it up then the audio effects are too loud.
Mine is the 2 disc Japanese set. I think the audio is balanced a little better on the Japanese disc versus the U.S. blu-ray with the old master.

Now I wish I would have kept SE DVD. It's been so long that I don't recall all of the differences in the theatrical cut.

Why the surprise that firing weapons amidst a cluster of tall glass-fronted buildings would cause such reverb/echoes? Not being snarky, it just seems logical to me, but then as I'm English and neither posh nor some inner-city gangster boi it's very likely I'll never fire a gun in my lifetime, so naturally I'll defer to y'all who've had such experience.

..yeah not surprised they they got big reverb, but surprised it sounded so good.. it's so echoey (i think 4 or more) that it does sound manufactured very much like a delay effect. it's extremely nice

I've no doubt they used production reverbs though if they sounded as cool as that..

I also have no direct experience! well once but never again and certainly not with an assault rifle.. (shotgun, clay pigeon, missed it, gave up)

This disc is using the existing 4K transfer from the Fox Vault but the disc is getting filmmaker final approval... if that matters to anyone.

In most cases yes. Is it possible on the back of successful sales 20th CS gains a measure of independence to do as they see fit with the former Fox catalogue?

Not sure there's anyone left to be independent. 20th Century Studios is just the Disnee 'brand' that this Fox content will be offered under.

Aye brand is what I'm driving at. And, should such a brand be established...

There's nothing to really establish, Disnee's crews are going to be handling any new Fox restorations going forward and let's just hope that, as already iterated, these discs do gangbusters and convince the execs that there's life in the old girl yet. Even if they just put out stuff that's already been remastered in 4K we'd have the other Die Hards, Butch Cassidy and Patton to be getting on with, as well as finishing up the Sound of Muesli remaster perhaps? Add in some Disnee classics like Roger Rabbit and fookin hell I'd be well happy with that haul before getting too concerned over who's gonna do what in future.

I'm a little late to the party but WOW this is such great news!! I thought Disney/Fox abandoned physical media for the most part. I'll gladly add Heat and Speed to my collection and hopefully they will both sell well enough for Fox/Disney to continue releasing catalog titles. We're all still anxiously awaiting True Lies and Abyss!
