I think the current best picture for under $5000 is the Panasonic 50" and 58" plasmas.

The 50" 1080p Viera is MSRP$3499 but currently on Amazon for $2300.

The upcoming 50" Pioneer KURO PDP-5010FD 50" 1080p Plasma HDTV lists at US$4999 list price, but when it starts selling in a few weeks hopefully that will have come down to.

With unseen black levels this 50" 1080p plasma from Pioneer also has Advanced PureCinema - 72Hz with 3:3 pulldown for accurate judder-free display of 1080p/24fps sources like Blu-ray disc.

That's the best picture you can buy for under $5000.
