Actually the iPhone is making huge leaps and bounds in portable gaming. It already has far more games available than any other handheld platform with many of them being free or at least much cheaper than they are on other platforms. Myst just came out at $6.99. Also Apple recently hired someone from MS gaming division and someone from ATI.

Sure, but there are boatloads of free/super cheap PC games, and people don't generally consider this a serious threat to PC gaming. How is this different?

Because for most people portable gaming is just a way to pass time between activities. Not many people actually want to purchase a portable device just to game with. However, almost everyone has a cell phone... and many download games for their phones. When people discover the quantity, quality and variety of games that are available on a device they already carry around with them anyway...... why would they ever consider buying a separate device to carry around just to play games?

the problem they're going to see tho is the wii effect. gamers like myself aren't going to buy many of these tiny crappy games. will the general public (most wii owners) buy them like crazy? sure..but then what

I think the best move made next is that Nintendo is pushing the DSi to the 20+ crowd. It's going to be the best movie they made since releasing the Wii.

I will never get an iPhone. Expensive and I have a phone that does everything I want the best it can. Even though it's old it's one of the most reliable phones ever made. Good old Blackberry 8700.

If Apple released an affordable iPhone that was unlocked then maybe I would get one. But having to go through the app store makes it pointless. Some of the apps are kind of pointless also. Why do they need a FedEx tracking app when you can goto FedEx.com on the phone?

They are aiming at the college crowd with the new pictochat and camera system and the older age groups with the cooking recipe "game".

It's not a game though because it's more like an interactive cook book. Plus Beyonce in that Rhythm game commercial.

They show those commercials during prime time.

Because most browsers on most phones are not nearly as user friendly as apps made specifically for the phone. I have and Amazon app on the phone.... it's great for shopping on the go. My Netflix app on the phone is MUCH easier to use than it would be to pull up Netflix on my mobile browser. There are tons of apps that one COULD accomplish the same thing by opening your mobile browser...... but purpose specific apps are just a much better experience.

There are tons of great little time passers on the iPhone.. and really... that's what most people want in portable gaming. Not to mention the built in 3G that allows multiplayer gaming almost ANYWHERE. There are a whole host of MMORPG's that are HUGELY popular on the iphone. iMob was so popular that they just reskinned it into iVampires, iKnights, and Girl Wars and tons of people play all four. Then there are some great little puzzle games like CatchaMouse and ZenBound that are great fun. There are over 9,000 games already for the iPhone. Sure..... many of them ARE crap..... but don't for a moment kid yourself into thinking that some of them aren't pure gold.

You can also play Metal Gear Solid, Myst, Super Monkey Ball, Spore, and plenty of other more serious games on the iphone as well.
