The word ‘iconic’ is so misused nowadays. I have no idea who started this trend of calling things ‘iconic’ when they’re merely well-known, or perhaps just fan favorites. But I’m guessing it’s a disease that spread via social media.

Anyway, I can’t wait for this steelbook! I’m guessing it’s a Best Buy exclusive, as it hasn’t shown up on any other retailers’ websites.

I feel the same way about the constant use of the word "legend" to describe popular old actors, athletes, etc.

The word "classic" is frequently misused as well. Very often I hear people using it to mean "thing that was popular when I was younger"

So what's an example of something truly iconic? I personally don't see the word used much, so I never 'thought' of it, but I thought it meant something 'well-known'

I think the shower and the helicopter scenes can be considered "iconic" movie scenes

By "iconic," I guess that I meant a movie that's not only famous but also highly acclaimed. I'm not on social media, so I wasn't aware of the word being used and abused on those platforms.

EDIT: Also a movie that's maintained its significance and status over a long period of time. It's stood the test of time and become something of an institution.

Entire movies, generally speaking, are rarely ‘iconic’.

A prime example of something from a movie that’s actually iconic is something like Marilyn Monroe standing over the subway grate with her white dress getting blown upwards by the rush of air underneath her. That’s a certifiably iconic image. You don’t have to know the movie or be a fan of Monroe to be familiar with it.

I’d hesitate to even call Psycho’s shower scene iconic. It’s certainly well known, notorious, etc.

The misuse of the word proliferates on social media platforms, but just browse the listings on Amazon Prime Video and you’ll see in the synopses, which are almost certainly all written by underpaid staffers or interns born in the late 80s and after, the word ‘iconic’ applied to things that are anything but. See also: ‘superstars’, ‘blockbuster’. Illiteracy is a huge problem these days in media. It does not bode well for the future.

Lets not forget the oft used 'Epic' which seemed to be used to describe almost anything entirely non-epic.

"Epic" = yikes, stay away. Perhaps has people faking English accents in non-English parts of the world too.

I don't think we need to debate the semantics. Pretty sure we can all agree that Hitch is "legendary"

Well, now I feel like an absolute clown for ever invoking the word "iconic." Thanks for making me feel ashamed, Mr. Simms!

I'm thinking of several frequently used, but certainly not misused, words right now. Can you guess what they are?

Does anyone know if The Birds 4K has audio issues (mono track) like the previous Psycho 4K release? Also, is it confirm that one can order the new BBY Psycho 4K without audio mono issues?

Thanks in advance.
