Yes. Let's see who can write a better story for Godzilla Vs. Kong. Good luck with that.

I'm okay with how the movie is. But some things could have been improved. A few people here had higher expectations, and I'm curious as to what they would do, specifically.

Suprised to see so much hate on this board for this film. Everywhere else i look this film is basically getting universal praise.

I had tremendous fun watching this and that's what I was expecting.

Well, to simplify, I think there's probably two types of people, those who enjoyed this movie as it is, and those that liked the monster part and wish for a better story and better characters.

I had no problems with it either. I found both storylines to be enjoyable and I liked how they converged at the end into the epic final battle. The only way to make the human story better was to extend the runtime to add more character development but to be fair nobody really wanted that in a movie like this.

The "conspiracy" plotline really drug this down and was ultimately pointless. I ground the film to a halt every single time it popped up and would have brought the move down to a more digestible 85-90 minute run time, if you ask me. Mille Bobby Brown is just not a good actress outside of Stranger Things and her paired with two equally mediocre actors didn't help matters.

I'm not going to dissect the script and try to re-write the film how I would have liked. But I will give three examples of modern kaiju films that I actually enjoyed more than this and are vastly different from each other: Kong: Skull Island, Rampage, and Cloverfield. Putting the actual monsters aside, I think all three had better writing and characters.

In my opinion, whether the tone is serious (like Cloverfield) or light-hearted fun (like Rampage) or somewhere in between (like Kong: Skull Island), it is possible to make a kaiju movie with a well-written narrative and human characters you care about. In my opinion, Godzilla vs. Kong could and should have done better in that department than it did.

To be fair both Kong: Skull Island and Rampage had A-list actors that people really enjoy to carry those movies. Haven't watched Cloverfield. Can't do that handheld crap. The cast for this movie can't compare to those. Even still I don't agree with those movies having well written characters. Skull Island had too many characters and none of them were well written.

3 types. Those that wished for a better story/characters and didn't love all the monster parts because big cg monster fights get tedious and boring. Especially when not in service of a better story.

And that doesn't pertain to Godzilla vs. Kong?

If anything, the plot was simple in Skull Island, so the characters serviced a story that worked and they weren't mixed up in some convoluted narrative like GvK had.

But, again, just my opinion.

Most of the disaster movies suffer from this. Most of the characters are just templates. They are there to either service the main cast or move the plot along. Which means they are generally going to be fodder.

Even the best of movies have this. Like Aliens. The difference is your main cast has to have depth, so you really ignore the back ground characters.

Very few movies in the action category are able to pull this off.

The fault can lie in multiple places.

All of these Monsterverse movies main cast lack depth. The reason is they are spending to much time on sub plots.

Aliens basically has one Subplot, Newt the rest of the story is focused on the Marines and the Aliens.

How is the plot in Godzilla Vs Kong not simple. One plot was to have the audience uncover
[Show spoiler]Mechagodzilla.
The other was to have Kong lead them to the power source to run
[Show spoiler]Mechagodzilla.
Both of which was just to lead to one epic battle. Was pretty straight forward to me. To each their own I guess.

Just from memory I think this movie has around 6 sub plots. With a few characters that serve no purpose to the main plot and could have been removed.

The only way to fix the storylines in these Monsterverse movies is to have a character that people enjoy that is in each movie. For instance. Don't kill off Brian Cranston in the first act of the Godzilla movie. Have him be the character that you follow every movie. The biggest issue with the stories in these movies is each one introduces more characters nobody gives a shit about instead of building ones they already have. But again since they didn't do it right in the beginning by KOM I didn't really care.

Yeah, this movie wasn't made with that group in mind.

Right, that way you can introduce new characters and have the plot serve them.
They really could cut down on the subplots though. They also have an issue with just dropping things set up in previous movies.

Like the reveal with Hiddleston in Skull Island.
As well as Charles Dance in King of the Monsters.

Tightening up the plot, gives people more of reason to revisit a movie besides the CGI.

I am going to watch this in 4 parts around. I saw the first 30 mins. The script is razzie level. But the VFX are mainly good, especially Kong - extremely convincing. I still don't find water CGI very convincing though.

Or just abandon human characters completely, leaving humans to be bugs to be squashed by the real main characters: the monsters.

I wish they could do a movie Transformers the Movie style. I doubt anyone currently running these studios would approve it though.
