My friend is a software engineer who worked as interim CIO at his company and I trust his recommendations. He prefers Nvidia cards. He said that they don't run as hot as the AMD Radeon cards do.

He told me that getting 8 years out of my old video card was a very good run, but I was still very unhappy with the Easter Day surprise of its failing right in the middle of a gaming session.

It can seem that way at times. Many years ago I did a customized van (sound system, lights, CB radio, etc.) that took many late night hours to do. Planed to use the money to buy a new piece of gear but had to give all + some to dentist for root canal. Last root canal was GentleWave procedure and set me back about $1900 (have no insurance).

Sorry you missed the deal. Some of the content looks interesting, will take a closer look when we return from seeing Texas Bluebonnets.

I tweaked my plan choice. I went for the yearly rate and still got a free month added. They won't charge me until May. The difference is only a couple of dollars, if that. So basically it's $49.99 divided by 13 months, which is $3.84 per month.

Approaching 50 is not so bad; I am on the threshold of 60. I never thought I'd last this long to be honest.

Speaking of things not lasting, the video card in my computer died yesterday. It was years old and finally gave up the ghost right in the middle of playing a video game. It was a Sapphire AMD Radeon 7970. I am using my motherboard's integrated graphics while I await the arrival of a new video card. Surprisingly, my mobo supports two monitors at 2560 x 1440 resolution.

I had to pay a stiff premium to get a brand new video card, too, and it will take two weeks to get here from New Zealand. My friend there bought it for me (I sent him the money) and he is shipping it to me. Believe it or not, it was cheaper buying it from there, even with shipping, by a full $176 over what it cost here. The new card will be a MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ventus 2X 12GB OC. It is quite an upgrade over my old card.

This unexpected expense will push back my subwoofer purchase probably until May. It seems like there is a conspiracy to prevent me from buying one.
I lost interest in the PC gaming scene when I got my PS4. VR takes up so much of my dedicated gaming time that I just have not bothered. I was big into PC’s a while back. I have a old Dell that is 12 years old but I only use it for work related stuff these days.

VR in its current form is a no-go with me; I can't endure wearing that clunky headset for any length of time.

The same holds for any AR tech. For me to use either the headgear must weigh no more, and be no more cumbersome than, an ordinary pair of eyeglasses.

The AR tech would also have to work with my physical media collection somehow, or, again, I'm not interested.

It’s pure escapism. I love it. Longest session for me was 4 hours with 5 minute breaks every hour. VR with glasses is probably more than a decade away. AR (true AR) maybe 6-7 years away.

Thankfully, VR is starting to catch on finally. It will be mainstream and part of the gaming landscape within the next 5 years.

Movies are pure escapism and I don't have to put a bucket over my head to enjoy them.

True, and film is my drug of choice, now and forever. But for gaming, not being IN the game is boring for me now. Especially racing games and puzzle games.

I (currently) prefer a clunky headset or glasses to having something installed in my brain which could be the next logical step.

I have the PSVR and the ancient Oculus Go. The go isn't very heavy and can be used with it's built in speakers making it totally wireless which I think helps a lot to alleviate some of the awkwardness.

Take 3D and make it "look around"-able and interactive and it really can be immersive. Add a little medication and you may forget it's not real.

If I had to chose between VR and movies then movies wins as it's always been fun.

On the topic of all this, I have to double double check but I believe somehow I don't have the movie Brainstorm...... ?!?

Doesn't get a good review here,.... I am fairly sure it should be remastered and it's becoming more relevant every day.

However, if I want to spend quality time with Valentina Nappi and Alina Lopez then it's much easier to organize with VR.

Wait until we get closer to 4K with PSVR2!

But yeah, film first always for me.

I saw that in TV it was pretty good. If they made it today it might be even better, but they probably mess it up.

I use the Oculus Rift S with my PC and agree that some of the experiences are truly amazing. But I still play regular games the majority of the time just because RPG's and FPS's are my favorites and there aren't a ton of those for VR yet, at least that I've found. I will say that Half-Life: Alyx is hands down the most exciting gaming experience I've ever had.

Farpoint is a great shooter for the PSVR made even better by the VR gun accessory i bought a while back. I feel like a real starship trooper when I play that!

I need another SSD drive for my computer and seeing as I am already out the money for a new video card, I may as well do some more upgrades here while I'm at it.

So, the question is should I pay the extra money for the Samsung 860 Pro or is the cheaper Samsung 860 EVO adequate? The Pros are almost twice the price.

Unless you're doing editing or something that requires super fast read/write speeds the EVO is sufficient. You won't notice much of a speed difference in games or day to day use between the 2.

Are you getting SATA or NVMe?
