On my 4K copy the audio overall is great but at 10 or 20 seconds past the 2 hour and 49 minute mark there is an extremely loud POP sound. It lasts under a second.

Did anyone else experience that?

It's actually baked in. Paramount did not do a thorough QC inspection before putting this out.

However it should be described, it looks like a product of digital image scrubbing artifacts... DNR or other tool to clean up the image.

DTS bomb.

Does it do it every time in the same spot?

What receiver model do you have? If it's an older unit, it could have an unfixed DTS Master Audio decoder bug. Some decoders that had user upgradeability at the time received a patch that fixed this issue. It was years ago.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is my favorite Irwin Allen television classic. I used to plop on the floor in our living room with my dad and we would watch this on weekends back in the 1970s.

I have a Yahama HTR-6190 receiver and my player is a Panasonic DMP-UB900. I think the Yahama must be more than 10 years old.

I was listening to the DTS MA 5.1 track. Yes the issue is reproducible at exactly the same spot.

Thanks to those who have responded. I'm glad that no one else has the issue.

I can definitely live with the issue as it lasts less than a second on a 4 hour movie. Everything else (audio + video) was terrific on the 4K disk.

A workaround for the "DTS bomb" is to set your player to decode the DTS-HD MA track to PCM and send that to your receiver. You're passing a lossless signal either way, whether you're decoding in the UB900 or bitstreaming to the Yamaha and decoding there.

I definitely want to sit and watch this film soon - hopefully all 3 1/2 hours in one sitting. Is the entire film shot on sound stages? I've always had a bit of sound stage phobia with movies and this one, with such a long running time, I'm afraid I'll spend most of that time looking for the seams and staring at the matte paintings I'll try not to let that distract me too much but, man, how much better had this film turned out had it been shot on location?

I got an email a few days ago regarding my BBY order which I bought early last week, still says delayed. The website states it's sold out. Anyone still hasn't received their 4K copy from Best Buy yet? I wonder why it's been delayed in the first place?

Fingers cross I don’t receive an email saying I’m getting a refund.

I'm in the exact same boat - Best Buy scheduled it for delivery on 4/2, then at midnight on 4/1 it was changed to 'Delayed'. Sensing it might be better just to cancel and find some other source.

Glad that others have mentioned that they also see motion artifacts.

There's definitely location shooting - for the Exodus scenes and for many of the other largest scenes.

It really is a superb production, all of the footage is blended very well and most of the time you cannot tell the difference.

Honestly, there is no difference from any modern film which are completely shot in a room with blue screens.

This is the same. Everything is executed to a very high degree of technical mastery.

The film remains popular not just because it an engrossing and entertaining film but also because it supremely well made from a production point of view. The sets and costumes and design elements are stunning literally in every single shot. There is a lot to see in every frame. Don't worry you will have a lot to look at in the background as well as the foreground.

If it happens to be derived from scripture, then cool.
Good point. I'm not of the Christian faith but I love the movie Risen and have watched it a number of times. It's excellent movie making with a wonderful lead performance by Josephs Fiennes as a battle and world weary Roman Tribune who gets caught up in the story of Christ and the Resurrection. How he has never gotten an Oscar nomination, let alone a win is beyond me, especially for Shakespeare in Love.

This is a highly stylized picture that way - it is meant to be very very tableau-y.
No doubt but that style of theater craft, before the advent of microphones and sound systems in major venues, where you had to emote and gesture so that the people in the balcony could see and hear you, sometimes didn't work that well in movies. There is some theatrical style from other cast members but, for some reason, Baxter in this particular film, has never done it for me. I do agree that, on the whole, Anne Baxter was an very good actress in movies and then, eventually, in television. she had a very long career.

Don't blame Baxter for this one, blame Cecil B. DeMille. His directorial style was to be a little bit showier/splashier when it came to emoting to the camera as he came from the world of silent films. Heston also gets this kind of direction, especially in the latter third of the film and he's pretty hammy. It's Yul that kind of keeps his acting in check and doesn't go into full blown 30's style over-the-top melodramatics. Probably had a few run-in's with Cecil on the set over this.
