Does anybody know if the PS3 has a 7.1 channel audio output. I am trying to figure out the best a/v receiver to purchase. Also, on the actual PS3 it says that there is a dolby true HD decoder, but doesn't have DTS HD on it. Is that a mistake?

It doesn't have a DTS HD decoder on it, but after you download the newest firmware, it will be able to decode those tracks internally - so I guess it's not really a mistake.

However, there are no analog 7.1 outputs and the only way the PS3 can pass HD audio after it's been decoded is over the HDMI output so make sure you get an HDMI capable reciever.

right. So what you're saying is that if I buy a 7 channel receiver and plug my PS3 inot it via HDMI it will be able to decode in 7 channels? What about the DTS HD MA? Are you saying that with the latest firmware it will decode it?

Yes, the PS3 (after the firmware update) will internally decode TrueHD and DTS HD MA. It will pass them to the receiver via PCM (not bitstream).
Also, (because it matters to some people) if the receiver is getting a PCM signal, it will never display TrueHD or DTS HD MA on the front.

The latest firmware will allow the PS3 to decode all DTS HD tracks. The PS3 will decode it to an uncompressed format called Linear Pulse Code Modulation or LPCM. The PS3 will then send the LPCM signal to your reciever, but only over HDMI. So get an HDMI reciever, that is all you need. You decide on what reciever, how many channels (5 or 7) and how much power etc. All you need for HD audio is one that accepts audio signals over HDMI.

If he buys the current 80GB now, it'll already be past firmware 2.20. DTS HDMA decoding was implemented before that.

The PS3 decodes Dolby Digital/TrueHD and DTS/DTS HDMA if you set it to decode. It will pass the DECODED 5.1/7.1 LPCM signal via HDMI so you'd need a HDMI receiver that can amplify sound through HDMI and PASSTHROUGH the 1080p24 signal to your HDTV.

You are aware he could buy any PS3 and update the firmware regardless via an online update??

The definitive answer is yes. The PS3 supports all lossless audio codecs in 7.1, including DTS HD-MA, Dolby TrueHD, and uncompressed linear PCM tracks. In order to work you need an HDMI equipped receiver that can process audio via HDMI.

New PS3s have updated firmware that includes DTS HD-MA decoding. If you happen to buy a machine with an older firmware update, it can easily be made current via a PSN download or PC file download via a memory card.

Thank you guys for the replies. Also, I am between two pioneer av receivers right now: the vsx 919AH and the vsx 1019 AH. There is like a $100 dollar difference because the 1019 AH has HDMI 1080p upscaling and the 919 AH just has 1080p video repeater. Which I don't think that an upscaler is enough to warrant spending another $100 on when everything you have is 1080p already.

The 1019 is the better choice for sure. Just try to get a deal on it... When the 1018 was out is was the entry level receilver that had everything you could want. The 1019 has 4 HDMI ports right, which is nice . I know I have all 4 of my HDMI ports taken up!. How many does the 919 have?

Could you tell me why it is the better choice? Of course other than the upscaling. Is there really a point for upscaling if everything you own is already in 1080p and the PS3 upconverts anyway?

Btw, the DTS HD and TrueHD light won't come on with the PS3. You'll have either MULTICH or LPCM light on. Just so you know before coming here in tears

o yea I completely understand that. But the point is that regardless of what light will come on, it will be decoding in DTS HD MA and dolby true HD? It just won't display it that way on the digital screen of the receiver because it's decoding it through LPCM. Will the PS3 show that it's decoding in DTS HD or DDTRueHD when you hit the display button on the PS3 remote?
