I really try not to fall into the "modern horror sucks" mindset. I missed out on so many great ones in the 80's and 90's cause I only watched the "hits" or studio films and ignored so many. Now because of the boutiques, I have discovered so many I love, I would have liked to have seen them "in the now".

So I try to watch modern horror. The problem is so MANY are shit. Wal-marts wall is full of that. Last year I WASTED so much money on that Scream Factory going OOP IFC sale! What crap! However, I found two there I really liked. Shudders and Netflixs offerings give so many crap ones, but once in a while you strike gold. I can't help but feel this is no different then taking chances on the VHS walls in the rental stores in the 80's.

On the drama horror, I am not a fan, but like they exist as its a different sub-genre that some people do dig.

I would love if modern horror all had more t&a and weren't so prudish (since the 90's), but they still make them, you just got to find them. And then you have to find them that you like.

Great modern horrors of all sub-genres are still happening, its just finding them when there's only so much time to watch stuff. I understand not wanting to waste time trying.

Idk what it is but it's definitely mostly boring and safe. Started years before the cancelling stuff though. Even the Halloween reboot doesn't have any nudity in it besides the flashback scene. Seems like you got obnoxious horror comedies, stuff that pretends it's from the 80s (remember the 80s? remember this thing from the 80s? and this other thing?), and pretentious A24 style shit.
Yeah, I know that there's a tendency to call the 80's a golden age of horror and I don't know that I've ever gotten on board with that. As far as MODERN horror I guess I've always seen the 70's slow-burn style as a gold standard but I also saw a lot of these as a little kid during that time and that was what was scary in the general zeitgeist. There's a whole discussion to be had here about original franchise entries diminishing the power of things like Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street in the 80's- not to mention Friday the 13th- which has always been the WWF of horror franchises, so nudity is pretty much required to make those interesting- but I like the standouts and not the series that have interchangeable entries. And don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of all the aesthetics- including gratuitous nudity, but I'd point out that many 70's and 80's horrors did just fine by being smarter and still being plenty subversive. Not to be a dope about it, but I'm looking at horror movies because of my fascination with mortality and wondering what comes after, so I'll take Poltergeist and The Shining (and for that matter some of these modern slow-burns) any day over something that's just setting out to shock me with a porn-style violence cut. And speaking of- I saw The Blackcoat's Daughter mentioned and I thought that movie was amazing. It stuck with me for days.
Anyway, there's gonna be some kids growing up thinking of a lot of these small independent horrors of the past 10 years as classics some day, mark my words.

That even ignores a metric shit ton of horror that's still coming out that is filled with sex and violence.. If you're only going to talk about "mainstream" modern horror than you have to take a step back and remember that most of these nudity and gore filled films from the 80s and 90s were NOT "mainstream" in their day.

I mean, some of these have gore/nudity but a lot really don't, especially after you take away the sequels:

This is probably an unpopular request but if SF still has a deal with Universal I hope they release The Birds II Land’s End. The film only got a VHS release and I would like to see it on disc. Sure many thought it’s a bad movie but SF has released movies worse than that. Another movie I would like SF to release that never got a DVD release is Daddy’s Girl. William Katt was in it.

The last time I saw The Pianist was in the theater when it was released. I can't believe it took THIS long to hit a domestic bluray let alone it coming from Shout. I know Shout is fairly diverse, but they've been branching out hard the past couple years.
Here's hoping it's better than the foreign (I think Korean?) release.
And maybe a steelbook announcement for In the Mouth of Madness so I can spend $30+ on a modest PQ upgrade??

And maybe some Friedkin titles like Rules of Engagement, Bug, and The Hunted. And totally. Uncut Romper Stomper! DANG IT! So many movies that need quality releases.

You're right. I think a lot of people are under the impression that their favorite gore and nudity filled horror movies from the 70s/80s/90s were big studio Hollywood productions.

And that the majority of horror films from that time were full of gore, sex or nudity.

LOL! Most definitely my one of my "Most Wanted" so bad its good movies and IMHO the GREATEST Alan Smithee film. As Monterey Jack said, any shitty movie from the 80's and 90's has some cult following; so for this one, at least there's the two of us!

The Birds II: Land's End (1994)
R | 1h 27min | Horror | TV Movie 19 March 1994

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109275

A biology teacher and his wife take their two children to an island summer house to enable him to write an important thesis while getting over the death of their son. While they are there, large flocks of birds appear and begin to attack individual humans for no apparent reason. The town mayor (who is also the local doctor) refuses to believe that birds are responsible for the spate of injuries that are occurring but, before long, he has no option but to believe as the birds begin attacking larger groups of people.

And of course as the thread in my sig suggests (of which this films listed), I am all in for Daddy's Girl!

Nah, everybody knows the MPAA used to hack movies up. Also doesn't change the fact most horror is tamer than it used to be.

Is A Stranger Is Watching a physical media premiere? There are so many films with similar titles that have been released that I'm a bit confused. The plot doesn't sound familiar to me.

No. It was released on DVD in 2005 and rereleased on DVD-R through Warner Archives in 2017.

I've seen lots of negative stuff about House of the Devil, usually that it's such a slow-burn that it's boring. I didn't find it boring at all, and love the build to the horror at the end. The Innkeepers is like that as well, but with more interaction during the early part of the movie instead of someone wandering around a house (as in House of the Devil). As for Ti West, he directed a few episodes of the new, grueling Them series on Amazon Prime. That show is truly horrifying.

Love Ti West and his work. Guy seems pretty chill.
Most of his known stuff is on blu. His first two features needs a release (The Roost and Trigger Man) but I doubt Sf or anyone will update them.

What scratches that itch?

As for the convo on modern horror, I dig some it. There has been some that don't appease me (Revenge and Babadook come to mind). But things liek Lighthouse and It Comes at Night are ones I really dig (the A24 stuff, i guess).
To me I see how modern horror films are trying to tackle things a bit more consciously and it's more obvious to the viewer. Stuff like the work of Peele is obvious to even the most common viewer. There's stuff that also plays in an undercurrent way that fans can dig for but the main themes are pretty obvious.
IDK, I just like to see newer horror films do things differently. Not that all horror has to be that way. I could see new update films of Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th tackle issues while also delivering on the violence (and T&N in F13's case).

That atmospheric dread it has going on is pretty much what I want out of a horror movie. I didn't know he worked on Them- I keep meaning to get around to it and now I've got another reason.

I'm enjoying the current state of horror. Yes, there's a lot of stuff that I don't dig but there's a lot that I do. I agree with you about Babadook. That's one that people go nuts for and I just don't get it.

Whenever A24 released a new horror movie it's automatically on my list of movies to check out. I don't like all of them but when I do I typically end up loving them.

I've also been enjoying a good amount of the stuff, to a lesser degree, that Shudder has been branding as "Shudder Originals". Monstrum, The Beach House, Scare Me and Slaxx come to mind.

I've been a lifelong fan of horror films (grew up on the horror films of the 80s and 90s) and I found myself not connecting with many of the "big" horror films from 2010-2020 that the general public & movie buffs seem to love.

I didn't enjoy It Follows, The Babadook, The Nightingale, Get Out, Us, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Witch, It Comes At Night, Split, the IT remake or the Suspiria remake.

That being said, there were still quite a few from that decade that I do enjoy, just many of them less talked about, less mainstream (although there were some good mainstream ones as well)

Here are the ones I like:

[Show spoiler]
  1. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)
  2. Stake Land (2010)
  3. Insidious (2010)
  4. The Dead (2010)
  5. I Saw the Devil (2010)
  6. You're Next (2011)
  7. Grave Encounters (2011)
  8. The Innkeepers (2011)
  9. Attack the Block (2011)
  10. Sinister (2012)
  11. Dark Skies (2013)
  12. Under the Skin (2013)
  13. Mama (2013)
  14. V/H/S/2 (2013)
  15. The Dead 2 (2013)
  16. Banshee Chapter (2013)
  17. Haunt (2013)
  18. Devil's Pass (The Dyatlov Pass Incident) (2013)
  19. Starry Eyes (2014)
  20. Honeymoon (2014)
  21. Backcountry (2014)
  22. Bone Tomahawk (2015)
  23. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)
  24. The Conjuring 2 (2016)
  25. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
  26. Better Watch Out (2016)
  27. Doctor Sleep (2019)
  28. Come to Daddy (2019)
  29. Fried Barry (2020)
  30. The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
  31. Come Play (2020)

I too, as another poster called them, didn't care for most of the "pretentious" A24 horror films, however, I did really like The Lighthouse (2019) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017). It's debatable though whether they are true horror films (I think they are).

Also thought the remakes of Halloween (2018), Evil Dead (2013) and The Invisible Man (2020) were solid, much better than I was expecting.

It's true about the MPAA. It's also true that it affected mainstream horror and mainly in violence and gore. The 80s are still filled with gory films but they're from places outside of the U.S.

Also, like all genres horror has changed. I don't mind throwbacks from time to time, I just don't want to see people making the same type of films from 30+ years ago. Filmmaking has always been about innovation.
