I'm on the east coast of Canada, and the only store around here that still has a decent anime section is Sunrise Records. They have a decent selection of Funi, Viz, Gkids and some Sentai stuff. Though back when my local location was an HMV, they used to carry Discotek and aniplex stuff too. Nowadays Discotek no longer has a Canadian distributor, so their releases are expensive to import.
My local bestbuy doesn't carry anime at all (they've severely limited their Blu-ray selection in general) and Walmart only carries new funi releases and Gkids Ghibli releases.

I don't remember Aniplex or Discotek titles ever hitting the shelves at my old HMV.
Bandai Visual had a huge presence at HMV with their Patlabor Movies, Gunbuster, Akira and Freedom. Which reminds me, I should pick up Freedom Blu-ray before that goes OOP.

My Walmart is pathetic. Putting anime in the BD/DVD kid section.

Wow. We're way off topic.

So, what is up with Gkids and Eva? Anyone?

And the wait goes on, hoping everything is going well behind-the-scenes over there...

This was towards the end of HMV Canada's life, before Sunrise took over the locations. I bought Discotek's Castle of Cagliostro and Jin-roh blurays there. I also remember seeing Aniplex's overpriced Gurren Lagann DVDs there, but not much else.

GKIDS' track record with the Studio Ghibli BD re-releases gives me some hope that it'll turn out OK, provided that Khara doesn't do something stupid.

Of course that's the one thing I'm worried about, as comparatively speaking the Ghibli BDs were relatively "easy" in that regard as they were basically ports of existing materials already used on the Japanese BDs (even the English subtitle tracks are the same) and thus didn't require any kind of active editorial involvement on the Japanese end of things.

In contrast, Khara's reputation in terms of meddling with foreign licensees has been well documented as illustrated by the delays Eva 3.33 had getting on US home video and the myriad issues of the Netflix streaming version.

Lucky you for having Sentai stuff at your Sunrise (Mine doesn't)

Also out of curiosity, what was Discotek's old canadian distributor?

I wouldn't be the one to ask. I remember in a livestream they did a while ago, they mentioned they were having trouble finding another Canadian distributor. I noticed their stuff on Amazon.ca started being sold by third parties around the time HMV went under, no idea if that's related.

I hope American consumers throw so much money at Discotek that they will become large and filthy rich to the point Canadian distributors will be lining up for the gig.

It’s unfortunate this sort of thing continues to happen...

Final Evangelion Film's Studio Khara Reports Slander, Threats, Criminal Intent Against Staff

Quote:
Studio Khara confirmed on Thursday that there have been "acts of slander, threats, and suggestions of crimes against individuals involved in the production" of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time (Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||), the "final" Evangelion film, in the form of misinterpretations of the film's content and related articles.

The studio stated that it will "protest slander, threats, comments that suggest criminal intention, and any other actions that undermine" the staff's dignity stemming from personal dissatisfaction with the released film. Studio Khara will take legal action and seek damage compensation for statements that constitute defamation, threats, death threats, and other related crimes. The studio will report to the National Police Agency of Japan for domestic instances and to investigative agencies in other countries for foreign affairs.

In The Professional program's documentary special on director Hideaki Anno's life during the film's production, Anno talked frankly about the Internet threats and disturbing fan messages that came after the earlier Evangelion anime projects. Khara posted a notice in March to warn against the unauthorized recording and uploading of footage from the film.

^^ What silly fools that post these type of remarks to creators fail to realize is, there is no such thing as true "Internet Anonymity".
If they want ya, they'll find ya.

And, I wish to hell they would locate and prosecute a couple of these morons.
Might slow down some of the other miscreants out there.

In more positive news, the Anime Expo 2021 banner art is a direct reference to Asuka's retconned plugsuit from 3.333 and 3.0+1.0. Hopefully this is an indicator of upcoming news regarding NGE's Blu-ray and an international 3.0+1.0 release.

I hear that the Blu-rays won't use the Netflix Dub from what I have been hearing since the Licensors for the French and Italian Blu-rays said the Netflix dub won't be on there!

Netflix charges too much for their dubs. Must be related to that.

As seen by how Sentai Filmworks has given some Netflix titles entirely new dubs, it's cheaper to make a new one. The situation sucks because it leaves those dubs not available physically, and when the streams inevitably expire one day.....

Nobody knows anything regarding which dubs will be included/excluded.

I’m more optimistic. I’m hoping both dubs are present.
