One thought that crossed my mind would be to use the poster art from their respective Japanese cinema runs, but the problem with that is that the primary posters for 1.0 and 2.0 are far too similar to each other and there isn't a good alternate for either film. Evangelion 1.0's "stairs" poster doesn't really convey much of anything to a viewer, while 2.0's "red-tinted shore" and orange "screaming Eva sketch" posters are too vague and too disturbing, respectively.

Upon further reflection, I think this setup would work:

• 1.11 - "Rei" key art as used for the Japanese 1.11 DVD.
• 2.22 - "Mari" key art as used for the Mexican 2.22 BD.
• 3.33 - "Shinji and Kaworu" key art as used in the Japanese 3.0 theatrical poster and French 3.33 Blu-ray.
• 3.0 + 1.0 (or whatever the hell Anno renumbers it as for the home video release) - "Pilots at the beach" key art from the Japanese 3.0 + 1.0 poster.

The only downside is that Asuka doesn't get a cover that she's the "star" of, but then again Shikinami is rather different in terms of character as compared to her Soryu predecessor so that mitigates things a bit.

GKIDS could use those covers for either Standard Editions or Steelbook Editions

Agreed. I have literally no idea what Anime Limited was doing with their typesetting, as even Funi did a proper job with it in their 1.01 and 1.11 booklets.

I have the Manga Entertainment DVD, which is “Death & Rebirth,” and it even has a full 5 minute countdown clock in between the two parts that was used as an intermission at the theater. Personally, I thought the film was a complete waste of time, even for recap standards. The recap (in my impression anyway) gave no new insight into the TV series, and it was too jumbled for newcomers. However, it was interesting hearing the redub of those portions with the more experienced ADV cast.

My guess is that considering the show first aired on 4th October, that's a Monday this year so it would fit well as a solid release date. Since Anime Limited has been offering monthly updates, July or August would be the best bet for anything Eva-related at this point.

Personally I would have expected more fanfare than it being simply dropped in their monthly round-ups a few weeks before release.

Well, it does have the proper title cards and ED credits from Rebirth but the rest of your statement is absolutely correct. Still doesn't make any sense why Manga Entertainment did that.

It's a pity that two of the three versions of Death will still remain Japan-exclusive as well, though. Here's a brief summary for those who weren't already aware:

• Death - March 15, 1997 ("Death and Rebirth" original theatrical run)
• Death[True] - January 2, 1998 (WOWOW satellite TV broadcast)
• Death[True]² - March 7, 1998 ("Revival of Evangelion" theatrical re-release)

While "[True]²" has been available in the West since 2002, the only way to get the "[True]" version is from the Japanese "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box set while the original "Death" is only found in the Japanese Blu-ray box set.
