It depends on what kind of effect you are anticipating. I have a set of 4 in my gallery if you want to look. I actually only have one behind my TV, 2 behind my speakers and one under my TV stand. They do give off a good amount of light, even just 2 of them. You can also rotate them within their clips that hold them to adjust the amount of light being omitted from behind the TV. You can also hit "pause" on the controller when the lights dim and change color when they are rotating to also limit the amount of light.

They have 8 different colors (if you include white) and they have 7 different modes to rotate the colors with. I like them, as they provide a nice effect when watching movies. They are also helpful for your eyes when watching movies.
