The odd thing is that they use another d.o.p. to validate the work of another d.o.p., simply because they worked with the same director.

Both excellent cameramen, and boy does France have and had some aces for that job, but the background of Decaë reads like the one of Coutard (a war time camera-journalist), the d.o.p. who helped to kickstart the Nouvelle Vague, a searcher, trying to push the limits, where Lhomme starts out that way, albeit his training was in a famous Filmschool, but later on seems to be more like a 'mainstream' kind a guy, who turned out gorgeous looking films ('Quartet', 'Maurice', 'Cotton Mary' and more for Ivory & Merchant, 'Cyrano The Bergerac', 'Camille Claudel' and quite some others; all great).
Why temper with other folk's work?

Of course it isn 't always pleasant that the original d.o.p. is on the restauration job; think Storaro who wants to change AOR decades after shooting to his beloved but misjudged 2.00 : 1 (= 2 times 4:3 side by side...)

We miss these old masters from days gone by, who are no longer among us.
Michael Chapman was Gordon Willis’ camera operator for many years before becoming a decent DP in his own right, he was brought in to supervise the new transfer of Klute as Willis died several years ago. Alas, Mr Chapman himself passed away late last year. So I don’t mind that sort of thing because the overseer isn’t going to want to push their own style on it, and sometimes even the original filmmakers need saving from themselves as you say.

(BTW 2x 4:3 side by side is 2.66:1.)

Titan Ateme seems to be the encoding software of choice for many facilities even though it is optimised more towards online streaming. My understanding is that FIM don't use Ateme and actually do have their own bespoke software, but might be wrong.

Eclair are doing excellent BD encodes (not sure if they did many UHDs encodes). VDM are also very good, they did the French UHDs for Apocalypse Now.
I seem to recall some studios are doing very good stuff too (Sony and Fox come to my mind).

I know they have a specific soft for DVD encodes, but I don't know if they're using an internal soft for BD and UHD encodes.

FiM's website states "One-stop shop offering full pre-mastering of UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD using Scenarist Professional workstations."

Eureka's Luke Louca-authored discs are generally fine (though "House of Bamboo" looks pretty poor compared to the Twilight Time disc); he's about on par with what IBF-HD use to do (which makes sense since Louca use to work at IBF-HD).

Any news on whether there will be more stock of this - I've had an Amazon order for quite a while and can't find it in stock elsewhere

HMV.com says back in stock soon, but I don't know how reliable that is.

Just got a cancellation from Amazon.co.uk - "Our supplier has informed us that this item is no longer available etc. etc."

Looks like everyone hated that colorgrading so much that made it oop, but given the feedback StudioCanal decided not to reprint it, because of that blu-ray.com review.

I agree with this sentiment. There may be a bit of noticeable macroblocking but I never found it to be a disaster. Still wasnt as annoying as Total Recall.
And the if its the Criterion dvd he had then it looked closer to the current 4k.
