Yes, I did see that. Some times they are wrong though, that's why I wanted to confirm. But further reading between the different versions, I may just get the criterion version instead.

I want to get the Criterion when the 50% off sale starts. I just got the Scanners II/Scanners III Double Feature for $12 off Amazon.

I am not a big fan of the scan used in the Criterion version, but perhaps that is the quality of the scan that was supplied.
Did a restored version ever get released? One thing I recall David Cronenberg telling me was there was at least one cut. The exploding head shot near the start was shortened. The body slums down as blood is spraying out. I saw it theatrically with David Cronenberg introducing it at a TIFF retrospective of his career. They had a new print struck for the screening, but that footage was missing.

He was able to get some of his films that were censored restored, such as the Brood and Shivers. I never heard about that one. Also the scissors scene in the Dead Zone was trimmed to avoid an unrated release.

Yeah that scissors scene in THE DEAD ZONE is brutal! I had read the book so knew it was coming, but even as seasoned horror fan I could barely watch that scene. I think it's because we can all imagine what that would feel like (as opposed to getting shot, electrocuted, etc). Our brain puts all the pieces together.....

I'd pick up a 4K of SCANNERS for sure.

What's the current best version of Scanners in your opinion?

I haven't bought any others yet, but perhaps the others used the same scan if the studio does their own scans. I didn't like the grain texture in the Criterion release.

The Criterion release used a new scan.

"Supervised by director David Cronenberg, this new digital transfer was created in 2K resolution on an ARRISCAN film scanner from a 35mm interpositive at Vision Globale in Montreal; the color grading was done at Deluxe Toronto. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using MTI's DRS and Pixel Farm's PFClean, while Digital Vision's Phoenix was used for small dirt, grain, and noise management. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the 35mm Dialogue/Music/Effects magnetic track. Clicks, thumps, hiss, hum, and crackle were manually removed using Pro Tools HD, AudioCube's integrated workstation, and iZotope RX 3.

The Criterion disc looks awful from what I've seen.

The one in the OOP Scanners Trilogy Ultimate Edition from the German Wicked-Vision Media was the best as far as I remember, better than the UK Second Sight or the previous German releases, not to mention the Criterion release.

I don't mind it. The other discs look too colorful (IMO).

I have to agree. Actually viewing the disc and not just comparing screen grabs, nothing looks "wrong" with Criterion's SCANNERS at all. It looks quite good, in fact.

The Subkultur LE German blu-ray is the best one, in my opinion, but it's very hard to find and pricey if you do. It has better contrast than the Criterion and does away with the strong yellow grading of the Second Sight version.

If the transfer of the Subkultur had the color temperature of the Criterion that would be nice. The difference in detail seems to be negligible between the two though. I still think the Criterion is pretty nice.

There are a lot of different opinions on the current transfers that we have. Wish they would just release a 4K and it would solve everything, maybe.

From what I gathered so far, I just purchased the criterion version. Will be coming in a few days. I'm sure each version will have different pros and cons. When comparing on capaholics, my only complaint is the contrast on the criterion version. I have an oled so it should help a little. They other versions have a lot better contrast, but the colors look too oversaturated. Of course I can't simply go off of pictures, so I take it with a grain of salt. One good thing about the criterion version which I like is that the transfer was Supervised by director David Cronenberg.

Just finished watching the Scanners for the first time ever. What an experience. The practical effects are mind blowing, pun intended. The last battle was excellent. Probably my second favorite scene in the movie. First goes to the head blowing up.

Michael Ironside was born to be a scanner. His acting puts all the other scanners to shame. Honorable metion to Louis Del Grande for his short but memorable performance. My one minor negative, the score could have been better.

I have no real complaints on the picture quality of the Criterion disc. Looks very good to me. Solid.

If you like a nice green tint over the entire film that makes everything hazy and darker. The DE Subkultur disc is the way to go.

I have a calibrated oled and I don't see any obvious tint(LOTR extended blurays) or haze. The image is not dark by any means. I don't have any other version to compare the Criterion too, but after viewing the Criterion, I don't see a reason to. Two reasons, one the Criterion was approved by the director/writer, two it looks good to me. I'll upgrade when they release a 4k version.
