The Yes site still has it for Aug 31, but honestly they can take their sweet time with this one. I paid $4.99 for the HDR stream and I honestly feel ripped off, like they intentionally didn't even look at what they were doing.

The latest Fox blu isn't good, and their current UHD is worse. Give them time.

My settings are on the brightest they can be and it's still too dark.

I don't even know if dark fully explains it. It's murky/ lacking contrast except in a very few bright daylight scenes. And this is all on the heels of the extensive restoration.

Yeah. Disc>Stream. I bet the 4k disc will be pleasing enough at least and nice uptick overall. Most likely getting the existing 5.1 DTS track over a new ATMOS.

So Mann has completely recolour-timed this, right? Same as the last blu ray release?

They must be working on the color timing, making sure it has a nice teal wash

The current Fox UHD stream uses the same source as the Fox blu 4k scan, approved by Mann. Not expecting an upcoming disc release to intentionally revise the color grading.

The latest color grading is fine and although I don't want to tell Mann how his movie should look in HDR, I think Heat's beautiful cinematography would shine (pun not intended) with HDR grade similar to Speed or Die Hard.

With its dark, flat look the 4K HDR stream looks more like it was shot digitally.

I think that was his intention. I remember an interview when the remastered BD came out where he said he was intentionally making the film look the way it would if he had shot it now.

I'll buy the UHD day one of coursh, but I honestly can't see my Warner Bros disc going anywhere.

Man I'm glad I just saw this. Keeping my WB disc on hand (Although it's still not the "original" as he tweaked a few lines of dialog to my understanding. I think that means the "original cut" is on dvd only?).

Yep, the original snapper case WB DVD and the 2-disc WB special edition DVD (which has the same transfer of the film, merely adding bonus features) are the only digital physical media releases of the original theatrical cut.

The first Warners BD cuts two lines of dialogue.

The Fox BD with the new cover of the LA skyline is the remastered version. It's a 4K remaster from the original negative, but as the similar remaster for Last of the Mohicans proved, that doesn't mean it looks like the film did theatrically. Mann did a LOT of tinkering with it.

He gave similar quotes in almost every interview when the remaster came out, he promoted it VERY heavily, here's the first one I found via Google:

Quote:
Q: When it came to remastering the film for the Blu-ray, were there specific sequences you focused on?

A: Yeah, the whole film! When you go into Blu-Ray, and you go to 4K, you’re in a different color space. Meaning that what was magenta doesn’t translate exactly. There’s no logarithm you could use to make “magenta” still stay magenta, with that exact color. So you have to imagine everything, from contrast, to how black blacks are, to what the color palette is. The ambition here was: If I was shooting the film two or three years ago, what would it look like? That was really it. So we went into every shot.

I agree, the original WB BD is worth keeping. It looks really nice compared to the Fox remaster.

I also kept my WB 2-disc DVD, because one of the lines he cut is my favorite one in the film.

Sorry, which line was it that was cut?

Two lines.

During Justine's monologue to Hanna, after he shows up hours late at the restaurant for dinner, she describes him and, among other things, says "You sift through the detritus." Mann cut that sentence. I love that line.

Also, during the scene where Hanna screams at Hank Azaria, Mann cut the line "Ferocious, aren't I?". It's an iconic line from the film.

It's similar to what he did to Mohicans for the 1999 DVD cut, he removed a lot of the more "written" sounding dialogue. I love the fact that his dialogue is not 1000% naturalistic. At least he reinstated most of the cut dialogue for the 2010 BD cut of Mohicans.
