I very much want A Quiet Place Part II on 4K disc when it is released next week and I will buy it at whatever its release day price happens to be. I don't wanna wait; I wants it now.

For titles that are of a more casual interest, and for some that are just format upgrades of something that I already own, I am willing to wait for a sale. Some movies I have bought over and over again as the formats have progressed and the more this happens the more I want a good price for the next upgrade, but not always. I love The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and I will buy every upgraded edition that comes along until the day I die no matter the cost.

All businesses need to make a profit and I do not see this need as their necessarily being "greedy." The more profit the studios make selling physical media, the more releases we will get. If everyone were to wait for discs to wind up in the $5 bin at Walmart, the death of physical media would be hastened if not even assured. I will keep buying discs, and often at release day prices, because I want to both satisfy my desires immediately and I also want to encourage still more releases. I will also gladly reward a company with more of my business if they offer a quality product. Receiving a high quality product means much more to me than getting a deal.

Lastly, as someone who purchased laserdiscs for many years during their reign as the best home video format, and paid their much higher prices, pretty much everything released today is automatically a bargain in comparison.
Agree with every single point. The only thing I would add is that sometimes, I am simply in the mood to buy something. I took a chance on Mortal Kombat and Wrath of Man the week they came out just because I felt like picking up a disc or two that week. I could have easily filed them away to pick up during BF or on some other sale, but wanted a little attitude adjustment from a couple of frustrating days at work, and $45 later I got it.

Kinda like what you did with Chaos Walking.

Mine is pretty price elastic I am willing to wait months and sometimes years for a price drop. I used to buy 3d films from europe but they tripled shipping costs and added vat so I probably wont ever buy them again (8 dollar order now costs like 30 or 40). When 4k came out it didint increase the price I was willing to pay for movies it lowered the price I was willing to pay for blu rays. When steel books went from 20 dollars day one to 35 dollars day one i stopped buying them day one and started buying films at clearance or when the reg edition went to 5 or 10.

Basically before I see the price of a film or tv show i have an acceptable price in my head and if the price is above that price i wont buy it. The price i am willing to pay also drops over time so the more greedy a company is, the less I support them.

It depends in my case, because I do try and leverage my money with purchases. If it's a hard want on day 1 I may splurge on a full price title. For instance my newest purchase is the G.I. Joe 4K disc that was $19.99. It's not a great film by any means, but it was worth it to me to get at that price on Day 1. Now for example, something like Quiet Place II, which I loved, I have a bit of a problem paying $30 for when I already subscribe to Paramount+. I cannot justify that price point. If it drops to $9.99 on 4K disc then I will get it. Until then, I have it via Paramount+ in 4K DV / Atmos.

I guess it depends on a case by case basis. I just canceled my Brotherhood of the Wolf Shout Factory order, because they fouled up the subtitled English translation. That's a $30 disc. I can now move the $30 somewhere else on a future purchase.

I buy everything with a slipcover so I'm used to paying more for my discs than normal. That said, I will wait for prices to drop on newly released stuff that I'm not afraid will run out of slipcovers. I bought Godzilla vs. Kong for $22 for example. I don't buy that many discs so I'm willing to pay more for them, especially since I buy old releases more often than new ones.

I generally maintain a soft limit on how much I'm willing to spend on blu rays each month of around 10 to 20 dollars a month. If I sell any movies then that money can be used to buy more movies. I am also willing to count gift cards I receive in that fund. If theirs a really good sale like Sentai's sales I don't mind spending more but long term I want my spending to be 10 to 20 dollars per month average.

Surely you mean $10-$20 average per blu-ray title? I don't observe any price per title average, but I do set a monthly budget for all discretionary spending.

Before I became ill, I thought I was doing good to keep my spending on discs at or under $400 per month, but I am also stark raving , so there's that to consider.

Seriously though, spending about $100 per week on entertainment is not as nuts as it sounds. I know people who spend much more than that for their weekly entertainment; the only difference is what they spend their money on. Some of them like to dine out a lot, drink, smoke, among other things. To each their own, but I do like the fact that I have something to literally show for my entertainment expenditures.

I really want to see Quiet Place Part II but not enough to watch it free on streaming when I know the disc is on the way soon.

One endearing aspect of streaming is sometimes I want to watch something I never heard of and I can do that. If after half an hour I just give up ... no harm done and then I know how to react if it shows up on sale.

off topic - Solar installers are coming today and I can't wait to see how that goes and a new AVR is coming tomorrow to replace one lightning took out last week.

Some of us have regretted not preordering or buying a disc when its available, and later having to get it on Ebay for much more ; if at all.

I used to be like you and solely wait for sales or good deals. But then I realized I was doing nothing but hastening the decline of Physical Media. So now if it is a title I really want I will buy it when it comes out at whatever retail price I have to. Especially limited editions because I've been burned too many times on waiting (as Better in Blu said) and then having them go out of print and not being able to get them. So right now I have 5 pre-orders of limited editions pending. I had to make sure I got them and will pay the premium even if it means I have to cut back my spending on regular discs.

I also collect a lot of older movies and I've realized some of the ones I would like to have I can no longer get because they are out of print or hard to find. So if I do run across one in stock somewhere after not being able to get it I will immediately jump on it as long as it is not at scalper prices. I've spent a bit too much on these as of late but really wanted them in my collection, especially a lot of film noir.

With all that being said I do tend to purchase more during sales for certain labels. I bought 10 discs during the BN Criterion sale this month. I generally only buy Criterions during their 4 sales throughout the year unless it is one that is going out of print and then I'll bite the bullet. Arrow, Olive, Classicflix, Powerhouse and Shout all have regular sales as well so I'm more likely to wait for those sales to get those titles. But I had to have Event Horizon from Shout so ordered that one the week of release. As I said, there are exceptions.

But at the end of the day you have to do what works for you. I used to be in a financial position where I could only buy a disc or 2 every couple of months so I certainly understand waiting for deals. I just happen to be in a position now where I can support the studios/titles that release top notch content and choose to do so.

*Edit* - I also utilize Disney Movie Club for those titles. Once you meet your commitment they have several 60% off sales through the year for VIP's. I'm able to get Disney 4K's for around $13 each during those sales so that helps a lot as well. That is how I got all of my Star Wars 4K's and 90% of my Marvel ones.

The closest good theater to me is 1.5 hours drive and for this one I'm planning to make a day of it.

(not available on Disney Plus)

I'm sorry that you also lost your AVR due to lightning.

What make and model did you choose to replace it? AVRs were very hard to find in stock when I bought mine; hopefully the supply is less constrained now.

I noticed the prices are higher for AVR lately and also my local stores had no stock. AVRs reviewed 3 years ago were $100 more now generally.

I didn't upgrade much ... going from Denon 730h to Denon 750h so "only 20 better." But I was fully satisfied with the old one so no need to go too crazy.

I think I may do the "seperates" route in time... Maybe or maybe not.. but I will certainly be on the lookout for people downsizing and divorce sale related second hand deals.

I got my advanced tickets for The Green Knight for 7/30 -- it's one of my most anticipated releases of the year.

My back is getting better, so it will be my first film in cinemas since it went out.

In the past I checked AudiogoN for used AVP's. Still look at AV Preamplifier News from time to time.

I am glad that your back has improved and I hope that you enjoy your return to the cinema. I'd like to go to the theater, too, but I am still pretty much under doctor imposed house arrest.

I have had
[Show spoiler]back problems ever since coming home from the hospital (I caught it from you ). I have been diagnosed with arthritis in the thoracic spine. Pain management is the only treatment for it or so I have been told. Just what I needed: more prescriptions.

Please give us a review of The Green Knight after you see it. I hope that it lives up to your expectations.

My previous AVR was a Denon; it served me well for 14 years. This time I decided to give Marantz a try and so far I am very happy with it.

I would like to do separates someday, too, but budget limitations nixed the idea this go around. If things ever settle down for me, I still want to get a subwoofer, but every time I get close to buying one, the proverbial rug gets pulled out from under me. I am beginning to think that I am not meant to ever own one.

I really liked the first Don't Breathe movie; please share your opinion after you see the sequel.
