Blu-ray player prices better.........

drop in price to match HD DVD players or its game over by years end. I am getting worried about blu ray, my collection of BD movies is growing but may slow down or stop till one comes out on top.


Anyone else getting worried about the outcome of all this crap? I thought Blu Ray had it wrapped up until last week and now cheap HD DVD players are coming.

And how will you feel when these cheap hd-dud players start breaking down 6 months after people buy them? How will that make Blu-ray look then?

Why would you stop buying Blu Ray movies? You have the player, use and enjoy it. All will be fine in a few weeks !
Cheap players don't do anything for me ! I will pay more for a name brand and known reliability ! Which is why I don't buy anything Toshiba !

I don't think they'll start breaking down after 6 months, but I don't think they'll make a huge impact.

What it would take for blu-ray to be in jeopardy is for HD DVD to surpass sales of blu-ray. That doesn't look like its ever going to happen. Anything less than this and we likely will have reached critical mass for studios to go neutral. I think before sales became tied, Universal and/or Paramount would have to go neutral since they'd be missing far too many sales.

Its easy to ignore a few hundred thousand sales, but once they start losing out on half a million sales per movie, that will push someone over the edge.

How about, when referring to HD-DVD players --- we use the word "cheap" - and when the new wave of blu-ray players hits the market, we call them "inexpensive". I like the sound of that much better. "Cheap" implies "shoddy", while "inexpensive" implies"good deal".

i dont think cheap players are going to make that much of a difference.. especially if they arent from a well known brand like sony or panasonic or samsung, pioneer etc..

You fail to understand that people that already have Blu-ray or Hd-DVD were not bothered by the high prices. The vast majority of the public say the 97% that don't have either the price is everything. If one format is 2 or 3 times more expensive the general public will go for the cheaper. That will led to the studios jumping ship from one to the other. If you do not think this is a possibility you are nuts. It's all about the price plain and simple.

I completely agree with your statements. Many people don't know about HDM and if they are shown a reasonable price to enter this market they will.

I find your comment interesting and typical. One side has a price drop and it's desperation while the other side does the same thing and it is a clever marketing strategy. Do you lay in bed at night thinking this stuff up. No wonder the HD-DVD side makes fun of the blu-ray people, they make stupid comments like that.

Walmart proves that it is all about the price. For the most part the people from the US no longer care about quality just price. For the most part Walmart carries a lot of junk but it flies out the door. Sad but true.

Good point. I have been thinking this for awhile. In my opinion, not many of your average consumers are going to repurchase much of their existing collection on HDM. I will buy all of my favorite movies again but you won't catch me re-buying my girlfriend's copy of Win A Date with Tad Hamelton.

HD DVD players are cheaper now, and this is the weekly sales numbers:



The difference is greater now then it will probably be at the holidays.

Why are you worried? Because if they cut another $70 of the price of an HD DVD player then millions are going to want to buy 1/2 the studios for $20-$30 a disc?

To aggresively compete with player sales, a $249-299 blu ray should appear before christmas. And a $199 cheap ass version, no matter the quality should show up by March. The movie selection is blu ray's advantage right now, but the price is the diasadvantage unless you are buying the best value, a PS3.

If these statements are so true and price is everything then the population to which you refer will stick with $49 DVD players until either HD DVD or Blu-ray players get into that realm.

I don't agree. Price is not everything.

If you're willing to spend $1,000 plus on an HDTV a $100 dollar difference to get a recognizable vendor's player (over some vendor you've never heard of before) is not going to be an issue.

My observation with people I know or have met is that those who have the cheapest systems (sub $100 players, sub $500 TVs and no discrete audio system) simply rent. They buy extremely few disks and usually their entire library is less than a dozen DVDs. I don't expect that population to change their buying habits for either HD DVD or Blu-ray no matter how cheap players or the disks become.
