One week delay is no big deal. I won’t watch them till Halloween weekend and or day of in a marathon.

Just hope we can get stereo audio for 4+5

Agreed on both counts.

cmac sounded doubtful when the subject of the original audio tracks came up during that stream a few weeks ago, but I'm still holding out hope

Yeah, I really don't see the issue with ripping the Stereo from the laserdiscs. The fact that many on the boards here can do it, Scream should be able to.

The original stereo on 4 + 5 in Dolby Surround sound so much better than the odd 5.1 mixes.

Perhaps it comes down to what the producer's at Scream can locate/purchase?
There's some copies on ebay for both that aren't going for prices that are too outragous.

I'm still crushed about the fact that all that material (for Halloween and other movies) appears to have been junked when Crust shutdown. It's depressing to me as someone who is invested in preservation of film and film elements that it all seems to be gone. Some people just don't understand the value in mantaining this stuff...

Amazon sells many, many other things besides physical media. This ain't the early 2000's anymore. Hell, I must receive something from them just about every other day with my Prime membership and as I've said I don't trust them with movies. They're great with a 12 pack of soap bars though.

And for the record, I'm not the crazy anal type who demands perfect Diabolik packaging for every single purchase. BBY's cardboard mailers generally provide adequate protection even for steelbooks in my experience. I have a 100% track record with Amazon UK shipping across the pond and even Zavvi managed to get over 20 purchases to me before f*cking up. It's only Amazon USA's garbage oversized bubble mailers that allow damage to almost every movie I buy from them. They are quite simply uniquely awful in my experience. YMMV though, especially if you have especially low expectations.

Seems the starting prices are going down, but I think they're all still selling for $500+. I don't think the set will come down on eBay and Amazon until Curse and H20 get new releases.

You can already find rips of the Criterion laserdisc for the first that have the mono and isolated music & effects track online.

If that doesn't work, there are plenty of users here that own the Criterion laserdisc for Halloween and/or the original CBS/FOX VHS' for Return & Revenge that are offering their services. I myself am one of them.

Probably a delay at the manufacturing plant, so they'd rather push the official date back by a week and potentially be a few days early, than keep it the same and have the releases be a few days late.

Do we know if anyone here has been contacted by Scream to get the those stereo track rips from the H4 & H5 laserdiscs? Knowing that would certainly put my mind at ease!

The stereo soundtrack on Scream's release of THE MANITOU was a Laserdisc rip.

I wonder if it's a matter of rights to a specific physical asset. Even if they've licensed the movie, the license to use the actual audio tracks from those old laserdiscs might be a separate thing.

Not sure exactly how it works, but it could be that those specific assets are still technically owned by CBS/Fox video, which would be Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, which... would... be....

And we know how nice they've been playing lately.

(Total speculation, of course; I really don't know what the deal is. But I do hope SF can work it out somehow.)

As far as I know, there's very few cases of companies or distributors copywriting film transfers and/or audio tracks. The only one that comes to mind is the 4K restoration of the original Night of the Living Dead. But there's obviously a whole history of that film being in copyright limbo, and as far as I know only the 4K transfer is copy protected, the film in general is still in the public domain.

As far as audio goes, the only time I can think of where a company has not wanted the distributor to use a specific audio source is on the Dragon Ball Z releases. Toei animation has been very particular over the years about what they will and will not allow foreign distributors access to, and that includes the so called Japanese "original broadcast audio" that has been circulating in online communities for quite a while now.

If (and this is a pretty big if) Fox does have anything in their archive from way back in '89/'90, I doubt Disney is going to be bothered to look for it. They can't make any money off the property since they don't have the license for it, so why bother expending the effect when there's money to be on the next avengers property

As others have said, the easiest thing for Scream to do, assuming the original audio stems can't be located, is to rip the audio tracks from the CBS/FOX laserdisc releases. Synapse did the same exact thing for their release of The Exterminator, taking the stereo track on that release from a Japanese laserdisc when the original audio elements proved to be unusable and/or lost.

My hope of course is for them to locate the original audio stems so they can be preserved. Sadly though from what cmac has indicated that has proven to be a difficult, if not impossible task.

I think the laserdisc stereo tracks would only be a problem (to use) if they were specifically created by the distributor for that release. Otherwise all the material rights remain with the films' owners.

Probably just a delay in manufacturing. All six of their 9/28 releases were pushed back.

Even if the original stereo is included with 4 or 5, I doubt it'll be too long before someone in the community rips the LD and syncs it.
Yeah, it'd be better if Scream could do it, but thankfully this is a case where the community has the tools to step in and do it themselves.

I believe it. Fan communities have already done their own restorations and "distribution" for the original star wars films and the various dragon ball properties. The producer's cut of H6 was in bootleg circulation for almost 2 decades, as were homemade versions of Friday the Part III in 3D. The hardcore fans will always pickup the slack.

That said though, it shouldn't be left to the fans to do these things. The rights holders and distributors should be responsible for properly maintaining the original elements and keeping the best possible presentation of their properties in circulation. Sadly many companies don't see these things as a priority. Anchor Bay couldn't even be bothered to do new transfers for the blu rays, much less locate the original audio tracks so the fact that the rights are now with a company that does care about these things, means there's finally a chance to correct past negligence.

What makes the LD so superior to everything else?

The remix has problems. You can look through the threads on those movies for all the details.
In most cases the LD audio is a direct port of the theatrical mix. And even if there are slight changes it's still much closer to the original mix. Plus in general modern catalog releases tend to have botched audio, with the LD sounding much more fuller and dynamic by comparison.

I'd also like to add that the Halloween 5 5.1 track seems to be fine but the Halloween 4 5.1 track is missing several sound effects throughout the film and the 2.0 mixes on the DVDs, starting with the 2001 release, are simply downmixes of the 5.1 track. The original sound mixes for H4 & H5 haven't been available on home video since the original laserdisc and VHS releases in the late '80's/early '90's.

cmac has indicated that the original audio stems appear to be lost so the laserdisc audio is the next best thing.

LD just had a deeper/fuller sound. I had the LD of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 and that soundtrack was awesome, you could feel the music. I've gotten every DVD and Blu-ray of that film and none of them have been able to Replicate the sound of the LD.
