First off, if anyone hated the characters, or the actors’ portrayals thereof, no one can take that away from them or change their minds. That’s theirs to keep & I wouldn’t attempt to make them ‘unsee’ so to speak. I will simply offer what I saw. The movies point was to be as realistic as possible. To this end, making the characters 20-something hipsters in uptown NY is certainly an accurate demographic representation of a sizeable (if not outright majority) part of the population. Those are the type of people who would be caught in this, were it real. That, I think, gets lost in some - some - of the criticism of the characters. Personally I neither loved nor hated them. I was there for the monster spectacle, & I got it. Plus the actresses playing Beth & Lily were pretty hot, which doesn’t hurt. But I do think the movie often gets criticised for having obnoxious hipsters as the focus, when I think that added to the realism because those are the people you really would find in large quantities in that setting.

Just my two cents.
Really good points, I’ll have to watch again with a more open mind. Unfortunately the hot women will be lost on me but I can still make an effort.

I left out Caplan because for mine, she’s not very attractive. Decent actress though.

Thank you, really. Fully understand if people have a ‘hate’ reaction to the characters though. You can’t unsee that. I was too caught up in the mayhem to really love or hate them. I love that movie.

So last night I watched Luna (also known as La Luna) (1979) for the first time.

What a perplexing movie. The movie is over 2 hours long yet I didn't really feel like that time was wasted, despite the movie barely having much musical score at all besides opera.

It's very easy to see why the movie got banned in certain places back when it was released. And in all honestly something like that probably wouldn't go down well if made today either, because you know some sort of online mob would try to torch it down for its.. themes.

Having said that.. I actually liked the movie. It felt very unique and felt unlike many other movies I've seen before.

While for the movie I can understand the low scores, I personally still feel that the movie doesn't deserve those low scores.

All that being said, if you haven't seen Luna and are interested in watching a movie that's different and strange and has the possibility of being a movie you like, then I recommend Luna (1979). You may be surprised by it. I know I was.

Rec deserves to be held up among the great horror movies.

It really does, easily the strongest out of all the found footage movies and certainly outshines the like of Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity.

It’s an excellent movie (I just received the Arrow version yesterday) but I couldn’t honestly put it in the top echelon of horror films. The top echelon of found footage, yes.

Oldboy (the original) is way overrated. It kept me interested to find out the what, who and why. But just about everything in it feels like contrived trite nonsense. The things that stand out and tend to be celebrated, like the hallway "fight" just stand out and do little more for me or the movie. The hallway fight looks stupidly fake too.

I liked it very much; it is a true Bertolucci film, a director who can make his viewers uncomfortable quite easily.
But some of his films are simply great:
Before The Revolution, La Commare Secca, Il Conformista, Last Tango in Paris, Novecento, The Sheltering Sky, and this La Luna.

A month or so ago people said how Nobody is better than John Wick. I don't agree after seeing Nobody. But hot damn was it a fun ride. So far my fave of 2021.
