How much of the converted footage has actually been seen by anyone outside the studio?

So you haven't seen any of the 3D and are just making assumptions based on a 2D trailer?

I don't expect great 3D either, but I do expect a great movie and a competent professional conversion, at least on par with Blade Runner 2049 if not better. We can hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Blade Runner 2049 had very disappointing 3D. Much of that film was large open sets and the film didn't use the 3D properly. Lots of wide open flat shots with flat backgrounds and nothing in the foreground to highlight depth. This film will likely run into the same issue. Same director, lots of wide open spaces. Wide open spaces require stronger 3D for the distance shots to really take on depth. Otherwise it all just looks flat beyond a certain distance, especially when it's not filmed with 3D in mind.

I thought Roger Deakins' cinematography was pretty decent for not being shot with 3D in mind. At least he kept the shallow depth of field effects to a minimum. The conversion itself could have been pushed stronger (for at least the close-up and mid shots). The cinematographer for Dune previously worked on Rogue One, so the photography will probably look more similar to that than anything (although I'd rather have Deakins again). Really, I'm just looking forward to watching a new Denis Villeneuve movie and a good non-Marvel, non-animated movie in 3D (average or not). With the exception of vintage 3D, 2020 and the first half of 2021 have been pretty bare for my taste.

No freaking kidding. At this stage we'll probably be fortunate to even get a 3D blu-ray for this movie. I'll be one of the first people to throw my money at WB if they offer up an "average" 3D blu-ray for this.

Last thing we need is more rehashing of this topic, but I wasn't disappointed. The wide open spaces coupled with the predominance of the city fog/smog were probably the biggest impediment in providing for more engaging stereoscopic mimicry (thankfully, there were some impressive environments that interspersed these scenes).

The 3D in Blade Runner 2049 could have been stronger.

Personally, I thought the 3D use in it was excellent and complemented the film perfectly. But, that's just me

It's tiresome to have to keep rehashing the same damn opinions on that film every 6 months. I don't usually put much stock in awards, but on this occasion, I believe it was well earned. Crucify me.

I'm laid a bit low by the speculation here that the 3D will be the pits as the hype for this film got me to level up my Dune fandom and now I know that they have changed so much for this film that the 3D was going to be the only reason I would see it.

IMO there are 3 reasons why 3D fell from grace: theaters bungling it bigly, putting it in meh movies, and lackluster implementations.

The latter wouldn't be a problem but for the former, of course people are going to be salty if they find they paid a premium to watch a 3D film that was effectively at par with its 2D version.

I also thought the 3D in this was pretty nice and the "whipped cream" for the movie. It definitively had its wonderful 3d moments.

Hopefully the 3D will be strong and with good framing for 3D shots. Dune 2021 being set in the desert, unless they're focused on objects, it would often be a sea of sand. Hopefully it'll match the 3D of Mad Max Fury Road 3D or exceed it.

You make good points about theaters botching up the 3D presentation for a lot of films, with dark or ghosted 3D screens ruining the 3D experience in many ways to the point the audience didn't want to return for more 3D later on, along with mild, weak 3D films especially.

My Cinemark theaters thankfully gave me consistently bright and clear 3D projection so I could really enjoy the 3D. Sadly now they are only showing 1 showtime for Free Guy at a bad time at my theater. Still better than nothing but not great either, since they should have multiple show times for 3D.

Compared to every other theater chain I've been to that often had a dimly lit 3D screen so the image looked darker, and worst yet, double image projection where you see a ghosted image onscreen at the sides of the screen at all times even with the 3D glasses on no matter where you are sitting in the theater (My Regal theaters did this all the time even though I asked them kindly to fix it, so I stopped going there). But you make a good point that many theaters that don't know or care how to properly present 3D do not help promote 3D well.

And then for those new to 3D in theaters, if they were unlucky enough to go see a weak, mild 3D film where the filmmakers didn't really care about creating a consistently strong 3D experience (like when you go to a theme park to see a 3D theme park film for example), their first impression was often their last impression, having felt punished by the barely there 3D experience no thanks to the team responsible for the 3D in the weak 3D film.

If a movie's 3D is so weak/mild that it makes people ask "Why am I wearing sunglasses in a dark theater for this?" then the 3D has missed the point of stereo 3D, which is meant to immerse the viewer with incredible 3D layers and dimensions not possible with 2D films.

Here in Portugal the premieres would be one day or sometimes a week and one day pior to the U.S. premieres due to prevent piracy for ruin box office. We premiere most on thursdays and have pre-premieres on wednesdays.
Now with covid-19 it still remains near that spectrum but less strict.

So one hour of the film will fill the imax screen and the rest of the film will be letterboxed?
