Because it's an easter egg found only on the Platinum singles, the Platinum Tin, and Holiday Edition which re-used the Platinum singles discs. ADV almost always stripped out the video extras and such for their complete sets to encourage people to buy the singles that paid the bills.

Excuse my ignorance but I'm pretty new to watching anime but I've mainly been under the impression that generally people prefer watching anime with the original language track. Is that just flat out wrong? Or is the EVA dub especially good? Is it like a nostalgia thing for people who grew up with the show in the 90s? I've seen the show but only with the original Japanese track so I'm really not sure - just curious since people seem to be placing a great deal of importance on having the dub.

I'd say it's mainly a nostalgia thing, though I'm sure there's plenty of people who like it without having grown up with it. I haven't seen NGE yet, so I don't have a preference, but I'd be willing to watch the dub and see how I'd like it. It'd also be nice to have it preserved, since all the other releases with it seem to be OOP. |

There's also people who don't want it to become lost media. Note how there was an uproar for say The Vision of Escaflowne when FUNimation initially announced the original Ocean dub for the TV series would be exclusive to the CE. Discotek Media puts enormous effort into preserving old dubs and plenty of fans end up helping them out with that, so a good amount care about preservation.

I didn't watch the ADV dub from beginning-to-end until this year, and I definitely enjoyed watching it unironically, certainly much more than the Netflix dub, which was a chore to sit through IMO. It's not perfect, and it sometimes sounds like a product of its era (some supporting characters sound awful now), but it has very memorable lead performances (Allison Keith's Misato is one of my favorite English anime performances) and an excellent ADR script IMO.
I guess that would be a bigger deal breaker for me than Fly Me to the Moon, although I'm holding out hope that the latter will still appear in some way. Maybe they'll do what FUNi did with Eden of the East's opening theme from Oasis, and include it once on the disc? |

I think it's hilarious and depressing at the same time when companies in America use big name licensed songs in trailers and there's no issues (like Johnny Cash's song being used in the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer). Or when films use licensed songs in a movie, like Kill Bill for example - and there's no issues.
And then we have.... Anime... If Hollywood movies were like anime, we'd hear Santa Esmeralda's "Misunderstood" song when O-Ren has the showdown at the House of Blue Leaves with B****x Kiddo when watching Kill Bill in theatres - only to be let down when we all buy the DVD and find out it's not on there because "muh rights and royalties" had to pass through what seemed to be 2,000 pages of contracts signed in blood and a pricetag that's one digit shy of practically selling one's soul. Because honestly? That's what it seems like sometimes by how big of a deal they make it out to be. Like, FFS it's not even the whole song of Fly Me to the Moon that plays at the end of every episode. And it's a cover too, it's not even the original song. YouTube can get away with dozens unauthorized uploads of Megumi Hayashibara's Fly Me to the Moon but somehow getting the song on Netflix or on the new Blu Ray is where they draw the line? Where's the army of rights lawyers routinely taking down the YouTube videos like with Don Henley's "End of the Innocence"? I won't be surprised if the ADV and Netflix dub is both absent from the blu ray and we all find out that GKIDS commissioned a new, third dub because the previous two just...couldn't be used for whatever petty licensing reason... |

With anime it just comes down to where it was easier to clear the songs for use in Japan but not internationally. Same reason we're not getting the Ultraman Tiga movie from Mill Creek in the US. It sucks, but I can live without it. There's more to Evangelion than Fly Me to the Moon. |
