question about 1.85:1 aspect ratio

Hi everyone thank you for the relpies.
It is the same disc and I havent changed any settings on my tv.
It looks exactly like the edward scissors hands pictures above except im on a 16:9 screen. idk maybe it is one of the settings on my dvd player. If it is then all these years i thought 1.85 had black bars and 2.35 has even bigger bars. When I get home tonight ill try mess around with my dvd settings.
Is there a setting I can change on my bluray player to make it have bars for 1.85? Its a sony player but not a ps3. I will check the overscan option. Im pretty sure there are no thin bars at the top and bottom.
