To me the most important thing in the Halloween franchise is to preserve the mystique of the Shape. That’s why I like the theatrical cut of H6 much more than the producer’s cut. In the theatrical cut the curse seems almost like it’s a theory. Nothing is completely spelled out, and Michael just goes about his business slaughtering people. The ending barely makes sense but I’ll take an ending that makes no sense over one that explains way too much as long as Michael still seems like the boogeyman.

In the producer’s cut Michael is a sidekick. He was given the curse as a child, which means they’re responsible for turning him into a murderer, and he was forced to impregnate his niece. During the ceremony at the end he just stands there like a dog waiting to be given a command. And he’s able to be stopped by a few stones with some runic symbols on them. Michael Myers is demystified, eviscerated, and castrated in the producer’s cut. He’s turned into a joke more than he is in Resurrection. Yes, I said it. I’ll take Busta Rhymes doing kung fu on Michael over turning him into a pawn who has no agency over his actions.

The ending of the theatrical cut is intense but it needed to make sense. All the genetic experiment stuff made it seem like an X-Files episode. They should’ve just revealed that the Man in Black was the Cigarette Smoking Man. He could’ve tried to splice Michael’s DNA with alien DNA, creating an evil alien human hybrid.

Likewise! A non hostile debate (especially on the Halloween franchise) can be fun but also insightful. It's interesting to me why some fans are ardent supporters of some sequels and outright loathe others.

I feel the same. 6 felt like a cult movie to me and not Halloween. The producer's cut is better but still feels like a cult movie.

H20 is a horror-themed episode of Dawson’s Creek.

And yet many “dated” 90s slashers still hold up well. Nothing in H20 does.

What!? Every home release of H20 has been way brighter than it’s supposed to be lol. The CGI mask, for example, is supposed to be barely noticeable.

I’m not the biggest fan of 5 either, although I do enjoy watching it for some reason. I just can’t take it seriously. 4 was the peak of the series. I’m not sure what they should’ve done after 4. If Jamie was intended to be the new killer I’m not a fan of that. Can’t imagine a little girl walking around murdering people and taking it seriously. Michael would still have to be involved.

That’s because there’s a cult in it.

Yeah the cult story was silly, and though I’m not a huge fan of the sibling story either I’m glad H20 went back to it and retconned the terrible thorn crap.

It’s not ideal but it’s better than “We’ve given him the power, the gift of Thorn, “The power of the runes stopped him,” and turning him into Uncle Dad.
The ending to the P-Cut is so insanely anticlimactic. At the VERY least they should have added a special effect when Tommy says "Samhain." Like remember in HIII when the lady is messing with the chip and gets blasted with the laser beam? Maybe some sort of light show special effect like that. Something to signify "holy shit, something major just happened." As is, it's kinda like "wait....huh?"

But again, Farrands' original H6 script (I say "original" but I don't know if it was his first one, but it was his main earlier one) was so, so, so much better. It had a way better ending with a final showdown between Michael and Loomis. I so badly wish they would have made that script rather than cutting it down to "Samhain." ..... "The power of the ruin stopped him."

He had something in his eye, ok.

And the real Halloween epic is H1, HII, H4.

I’m not a fan of anything overtly supernatural in the Halloween movies (except in Halloween III). I don’t want to see any magical light flashes or special effects that show something supernatural. I know Farrands said he wanted something like that in the P-Cut commentary but to me Michael has to remain ambiguous. He has to be a human with a slight supernatural edge so that you aren’t sure if there’s more to him or not. He’s a complete enigma who seems more than a man but we don’t know why. At least in the P-Cut you can chalk it up to Michael being confused when Tommy says “Samhain.”

I read Farrands’ first draft and I enjoyed it, but there are overtly supernatural elements in it that I just can’t get on board with. I think the basic plot of the film is okay since he was left with the mess from H5 that required him to explain who the Man in Black was and what the Thorn symbol meant, but it went too far IMO. I think a better idea would be to have the cult just be a bunch of weirdos who worship some deity and they think Michael was picked by their deity to restore balance to the planet by killing people, so they captured him. But it’s never confirmed that they’re correct. Just have them be obsessed and then at some point Michael escapes and Sartains them all.

I also never would’ve had the cult kidnap Jamie. After what she went through in H4 and H5, having her kidnapped for several years and impregnated is too much. And then she’s either drilled to death (theatrical cut) or shot on the head with a pistol James Bond-style (producer’s cut). Poor girl went through hell.

I agree. H1, HII, and H4 is the best trilogy. I also like H20 as the third film if I’m in an H20 mood. H20 has a very Scream-ish feeling but I don’t really mind because I like Scream. H20 was also the first Halloween movie I saw in theaters and I remember the audience going nuts at the end.

The cult story also went against what the original Halloween was about. The original Halloween never explained what made Michael do what he did. The idea was he was just pure evil and the not knowing is what made him scary.

The cult story explained why Michael was evil. When he was six he killed his sister but now with the cult being involved at Smith's Grove we are led to believe they tapped into his evil side when he was young and was controlling him or whatever it was they did to him. Who knows. lol

Halloween 5 started the cult story but between Tina and the goofy cops with the cartoon music playing when they were on screen it was so far removed from the original movie. H5 needs a laugh track in my opinion. I do like Halloween 4 and feel it's far superior to 5 & 6.

I loved that H20 was a direct sequel to Halloween II and got rid of the cult story.

With the exception of part 3, which I haven't watched since I saw it on VHS, I will buy and rewatch every installment of this franchise as they get released in better quality.
I also agree that 1,2 and 4 are the best time-line...I enjoy 20 as a product of it's time and the Zombie movies as something altogether different..
