[QUOTE][Directors Albert and Allen Hughes and screenwriter Tyger Williams were barely into their twenties when they sent shock waves through American cinema and hip-hop culture with this fatalistic, unflinching vision of life and death on the streets of Watts, Los Angeles, in the 1990s. There, in the shadow of the riots of 1965 and 1992, young Caine (Tyrin Turner) is growing up under the influence of his ruthless, drug-dealing father (Samuel L. Jackson, in a chilling cameo) and his loose-cannon best friend, O-Dog (Larenz Tate), leading him into a spiral of violent crime from which he is not sure he wants to escape, despite the best efforts of his grandparents and the steadfast Ronnie (Jada Pinkett). Fusing grim realism with a propulsively stylish aesthetic honed through the Hughes brothers’ work on rap videos, Menace II Society is a searing cautionary tale about the devastating human toll of hopelessness./QUOTE]

[Show spoiler]Just announced

We’re thrilled to announce Criterion’s first 4K Ultra HD releases, a six-film slate that includes Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night. The first of these editions and their special features will be detailed in our November 2021 announcement next week, with others to follow in subsequent months.

The most dazzling debut in cinema history, Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane was Criterion’s first laserdisc release 37 years ago. It now rejoins the library after a long absence, making its first appearance in 4K Ultra HD along with Allen and Albert Hughes’s riveting breakthrough Menace II Society; Jane Campion’s Academy Award–winning The Piano, starring Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin in her breakout role; David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., a tale of love and jealousy in the city of dreams; Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s singular Technicolor fantasia The Red Shoes; and Richard Lester’s timeless movie musical A Hard Day’s Night, which brought the Beatles’ revolutionary talent and irreverent humor to the big screen.

Each title will be available in a 4K UHD+Blu-ray combo pack including a 4K UHD disc of the feature film as well as the film and its special features on Blu-ray. Select films will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos. Stay tuned for more details in our November

Rarely does an email make me yell "yes!" out loud, but this did it for me. I know Citizen Kane is the release that will (deservedly) get the most attention, but Menace is my joint. Can't wait.

Hell yeah! This will also be the unrated version, as well. New Line's BD was also UNRATED, but the HBO MAX version is the theatrical cut that omits additional instances of ultra violence.

I'm a fan all sorts of ghetto stories. When I was younger I liked Boyz N the Hood more, but Menace dosn't have those embarrassing moments in it like Boyz does.

I wonder what Criterion's 4K UHD cases/covers look like.

Classic movie, classic soundtrack.

These are just a few bangers that come to mind. Damn, I miss those days in rap and contemporary R&B. Music actually had a soul back then and it sounds so much better than the stuff they put out nowadays...

I own the Blu-ray, but still haven't seen this. I believe Criterion released this on laserdisc back in the day (in addition to some other Hughes Bros movies). Cool to see it rejoin the collection.

Criterion also did Dead Presidents. It would be awesome if CC could do that on 4K but it's owned by Disney now. Even Kino couldn't get 4K rights to it.

O Dog in 4K. Never thought I’d see the day. Hope someone will get Dead Presidents on bluray at some point. I keep hoping Kino gets it, but maybe criterion is open to trying.

Hopefully it includes both versions. The current Blu-ray only has the director's cut.
