Default Receiver w/ budget of $500 - $1K

I have a friend that is looking at receivers and his budget is $500 - 1$k. Recommendations please. I am not looking at entry level anything. If the best value is a Denon XXX or a Yamaha XXX for $1K, that is fine.

Thanks for all the input!

I'd hold out for one of the new Onkyo models, like and 807 or an 877.
They have yet to be announced, but they should be coming out shortly. Usually an early to mid summer release for Onkyo.

Have you both considered separates?

With that budget your friend can choose from a number of quality AVR's:

In no particular order,

1. Marantz 7002 7 x 110w HDMI 4in/2out Audessey $899.99

2.Denon 3808ci 7 x 130w HDMI 4in/1out Audessey $999.99

3 Pioneer SC-07 7 x 130w HDMI 4in/2out MCACC $under 1000.00

4.Yamaha RX-V3800 7 x 140w HDMI 4in/1out YPAO $899.99

5. Onkyo 876 7 x 140w HDMI 4in/2out Audessey $949.00

Each of these have the newest codecs, Dolby TrueHD,and dts-ma. Also are THX Ultra2 certified.

Hope this is helpful.

Aramis - Sorry for the confusion. I personally am not looking for a receiver, I have a Sony 920 which I love. I am looking for my friend only.

No, I caught it. But you said "I am not looking at" so I just assumed you guys were looking together- that you were helping him. Point still stands though- at $1k separates starts to look mighty tempting.

I can only speak from experience in that I really love my Onkyo 805. Your budget is a bit beyond it, however. I would think that Pioneer's Elite models would definitely be on the short list.

Yeah the Elite SC-07 would be my choice...wait a minute that is my pick I just got one. HaHa

this receiver is on the verge of being scary good. The MCACC calibration tool took my acoustically challenged room with boomy bass and corrected it.How I don't know, but I do know my sub produces solid pounding, accurate bass without the reverb. Awesome.

My speakers have been given new life. Before the signal sent to the rear surrounds would sound like they stopped at the speaker, now the sound has zip and is blazing by. ie bullets, planes, broken glass.

JMO.

Aramis, It sounds like you are going to take the plunge into separates. Any idea what amp?

I've been debating. Biggest hurdle is the wife, honestly. If I do go forward I think it'll be a Rotel 1075. Price is right used and it seems like a good balance of price and performance. Also debating the Emotiva XPA-3.

If you are going to pull the trigger, you had better do it before the baby is born, you know what its like to justify these kind of purchases...post baby.....it's nearly impossible if you as me.

I'll be keeping my eye on what you eventualy do aramis, as I too want seperates by the end of the year and I want to see what you decide on.

back on topic, sorry OP.....seperates are definitely worth considering since you have $1,000 to play with, and Pioneer and Denon, along with Onkyo all make excellent receivers.

tell me about it... I've been trying to explain why "WE" need a new BDR because the one we have now (1.1) doesn't bitsream (1.3).

I do not have an amp , but soon I will , however, I attached this link from a sticky that Big Daddy did that lists amp manufacturers. I wish I could provide better help, but amp knowledge is something I am trying to catch up on.....

Get the best Pioneer Elite model you can with your budget. The most well rounded and pure sounding receivers out there. Denon and Yamaha are quite good, too.

This is good advice too. I personally would look at the best Pioneer Elite I could get ahold of and compare that with separates from Emotiva, Outlaw, and Rotel. I think Rotel's going to quickly get out of the budget, but those three are all good "starter" companies for separates.

I would love to get the upcoming Outlaw Audio Model 997 Preamp/Processor combined with the Outlaw Audio Model 7900 7-channel Balanced Amplifier. Of course there is no way I can fit it in my budget...but my buddy is already half way there with the amp (got it for $1000 off during a recent sale). And he plans on getting the 997 when it comes out. His system sounds damn good right now with an ancient Pioneer Elite, some wonderful old polk towers, and that amp.

I am very please with my onkyo. It had alot of features that denon and yamaha do not in this price range.
I also like the fact that onkyos have audyssey and you can change each speaker xover individually.
