Nah I paid attention to it pretty well considering all the problems it had - and that's why that ending is just flat. In general, you want to build up all this mystique and intrigue for your new movies based on the actions and premises on a genuine classic anime (the original - whose concepts are still debated and analyzes about today), and you end it with a, "everything and everyone's fine now" moment with some Mary-Sue new chick in the last 3 minutes of the final film? Especially when it's been 14 years of fan anticipation for this ending? And ESPECIALLY when compared to how EoE ended 20+ years ago?

It's very clear to me that Anno was influenced by a staff of people who weren't around for the original series. That, combined with him maybe feeling his old(er) age and wanting to tell a story different from his younger self, and this reeks of modern trope endings that I've been seeing in anime for a good 15 years now =/

But again, I give my opinions will all due respect to those who liked it. But as a fan from the beginning (I'm not saying I'm above anyone else as a fan just because I'm older, mind you), it was a real disappointment.

This was essentially the fourth ending for Eva, one that intended to end it all for good. It's like a video game with multiple paths - you keep going down the paths for the darker, bad endings but eventually you make the right choices for the 'good' ending. 3.0 + 1.0 is the good ending. Maybe not the best ending, that's up to the viewer.

I would say the TV ending is the good ending, EoE is the bad ending, Thrice Upon a Time is the TRUE ending. If we're gonna be referencing Persona.

I finished my revisiting of the first three rebuild films and put them up on eBay. I did not ask an exorbitant price. I priced them to move, but I do already have a bid for more than I paid for them. They were enjoyable films and I look forward to when I can see the fourth one. I probably got more into this world and its characters on this viewing than ever before.

I don't know what GKids has planned for physical releases. Don't know if they'll do a box set of the rebuild films and separate set of the original series AND a set with both or what. If they're doing a 4K release of the rebuild films, I doubt they'll mix and match 4K releases of the rebuild films with blu ray releases of the original series.

I do plan to finally watch the original series all the way through when it becomes available to me.

But there's nothing shown here that you haven't seen (and seen better) in any other anime with multi-colored flashes, (some) sexy girls in tight clothing, and giant robots shooting things.

There's too much wasted exposition on non-important characters (or characters where the exposition amounted to nothing other than fan pandering), zero exposition on the events that led up to the "why" and "how" of this movie's story even taking place, too many complicated designs of robots and ships in "frenzied" cg-animation, and a slew of familiar terms and ideas from Creationism that that adds in weird sci-fi elements as a passive "the reason" by which Evangelion exists (which probably stuck out to me more since I was a(n unwilling) Catholic school boy).

It's a fine enough ending for any other anime. But for Eva? This was pretty disappointing.
Just wanted to say I agree with this 100%. I think people are being way too kind to this movie out of love for the original series. The ending result is fine, it's just the execution they used to get there (taking everything up to 11 with the Evas, spears, etc. to the point that they lose their magic they had in the show) and the mountains of exposition and implied history that we never got to see between characters (Mari apparently knows everyone? Is she the "key" to all this like Jar Jar was for the SW prequels?) made it really unsatisfying for me.

I was browsing Reddit on mobile when a post on the r/Evangelion subreddit caught my eye: It’s Tiffany Grant tearing Dan Kanemitsu a new one over his script changes for the Rebuild re-dubs:

Shouldn't she just be happy that she got to voice Asuka again? I swear all these original VAs do is whine. Good grief.

Lol. So all the Japanese voice actors send out words of love to the fans for watching the movie after a long wait and the dub actors just ***** instead. Sounds about right.

Her points are completely valid, though. No different than any other actor expressing grief over past projects.

What's next? Is the encoding janitor at Funimation going to start offer commentary on art direction?

The final movie is what it is-either you like it or you don't-I didn't. That is my opinion-not anybody else's. My feelings on Evangelion as a whole are rather ambivalent-not bad but I've seen better.

What an ending.

Can't wait for the Blu-ray to come out in Japan. The Prime subs were great, so that's taken care if. Just have to replace "Gendoh" with "Gendo"

Yeah I understand that. But If she had a problem with Dan Kanemitsu from the start then she could've declined returning. All that fuss over being recast in 2019, then she finally gets the option to voice Asuka once more and that's how she acts immediately after the movie releases.

That's flawed logic. It's not like "regular" people can't have completely valid reasons to complain about their boss or their job and still work there.

Nobody made her return to voice Asuka. If she knew this guy was involved then she could've easily declined and been on her way. She was recast once before, whats a second time? The point is she comes across as very immature.

I've just rewatched Eva 1.11 with the amazon dub and it was extremely awkward sounding. I couldn't really see how a native english speaker would choose this over the Funi dub. It really made me wonder if the end of the Khara/Funimation deal was in part due to personality conflicts. This seems to confirm that. It wouldn't surprise me if someone told Dan Kanemitsu that he wasn't as fluent in English as he thought he was and he got offended. Unfortunately, if someone did say that...well they were right.

I'm working myself up to see the rest of the movies with some dread. I watch probably around 90% of anime with subs, but there are some dubs that I enjoy and think are good. I enjoyed the Funimation dubs of the rebuilds and am a little sad to see what the new dubs have turned into.

Hmm I wonder if this is going to show up anywhere else besides GKIDS and the Anime Limited site. Really curious to see if it'll be in the $200+ range as well.

Nobody made her, but she decided to and has something to say now. This didn't strike me as immature. Again, I don't see it as any different than anyone else working a job that they love but occasionally complaining about a boss, co-worker, or aspect of the job that they don't love. VA's are allowed to do that at their jobs too

Agree to disagree I guess. It's immature and unprofessional in my opinion.

Its a little different when you complain to your friends about your boss/job and posting it on the internet for all to see. She can say what she wants, but don't be surprised if your turned down for a job in the future.

Anyways.

I just finished 3.33, still don't like it, gonna watch the last one tomorrow. Glad to see the generally positive reviews.
