That's episode 16. The 16mm elements were destroyed in a flood or something like that. I think 35mm blowup elements exist, and while the animation does differ in places, I really don't see why they didn't just use that.

As for the music licensing thing, I'm sure it is expensive, but it's a shame they weren't more transparent about it earlier. You're getting a lot of people saying they won't buy it without the song, but I'll bet you anything if they'd been up front about how much it cost and run a Kickstarter or something, they could've gotten it. I think given a straightforward explanation and the chance to help make it happen, people would've been a lot more understanding.

Its geolocked besides just being region locked. Deters reverse importation (even though the blus have been there for a while), probably a liscening requirement.

This is disappointing.

I’m just gonna hold onto the last glimmer of hope that the bonus classic dub was included in a separate set of episodes because they were able to make a deal and retain the 2003 renewal episodes in their entirety. I know it’s a long shot and I’m basically in the denial phase, but wouldn’t it be a pleasant surprise if it was true?

I debated on this for a bit since its not what I was expecting at all in terms of artwork, content, or price, but ultimately decided to put the preorder in. In the end, Eva is my 2nd favorite all time series, so I was always going to get a set, and fomo is strong. I mean heck, I literally see the NERV logo all the time

[Show spoiler]

Still could cancel depending on the standard set. I have no need for either dub but do like the classic subs. And of course I'm a sucker for artbooks. Shame the bonus features are probably on the main discs or I would just sell those and keep the classic ones.

Though the GKIDS release is more expensive than the Japanese standard edition release, which is currently $160 with shipping through Amazon Japan.

Nah. Trinkets and retro boxes of a dead format aren't the same as actual content.

I like the set actually, I won't buy it, but my point was thrm making this in a laserdisc format is no indication it was made by fans for fans because plenty of soulless companies have been preying on our love of nostalgia.

I'm not sure I follow. ADV did dub the director's cuts.

Love the oversized artwork with the laserdisc concept.

Don't care about the ADV dub (or any other dub for that matter) so those discs are just dead weight to me and it bothers me to think that obtaining those rights inflated the cost of the whole thing.

Looks like the extras are the same from the japanese edition so I'm very pleased with that.

The paperweight and the card are uninspired extras that do nothing for me and just add up to the cost.

The book is probably going to be a nice bonus for those that don't have any of the artbooks but for those of us who do it's probably going to add nothing.

So, for me the perfect edition would be one that has the laserdisc box and artcards along with the official release and bonus material. No bonus dub discs, book nor trinkets. Does that sound like a Limited Edition to you? Realistically, a LE will probably not be oversized and still include the adv dub so I might actually end up waiting for the standard edition to avoid overpaying for stuff that I don't want.
I think it’s fair to say that the next less expensive tier will exclude the paperweight and lanyard. So it should still include the art cards, and art book, etc. The next tier down probably removes all the physical extras and is a special edition with just the bonus discs (i.e. bonus classic dubs). The final tier (standard edition) is then probably just the barebones content including the international dub.

You would need to collect anything between 500,000 and 1,000,000 USD to clear the rights which divided by 5,000 customers would take 100-200 USD per customer JUST for the license! Though I would agree that a campaign for use of only one version of the song might have been doable...

I want that song in the show as much as anyone else. It's appalling that an official, legal, international release gets denied of it because the owner of the rights is unwilling to negotiate the terms until everyone can make a profit out of this. They would rather not get paid and let their song fall into oblivion. Under the context of this particular case it's the show that gives more value to the song, not the other way around.

But whatever. As far as FMTTM goes, I've moved on and I won't let its absence influence my judgement when I decide what edition I'll get.

More so disappointing because Kyle Sturdivant was my favorite English Dub actor for Kaworu but he was unavailable when ADV dubbed the DC episodes and Kaworu was recast, I was looking forward to rewatching Kyle Sturdivant's performance again with this set but I guess not.

Well yeah, I didn't say it made any sense at all in this case. I'm sure any Japanese fans who seriously wanted it have gotten the series on blu by now.

I will admit, I'm a bit torn on this, but I'm definitely leaning towards "pass".

On one hand, I love the look and contents of the set itself, it's something I'd love to put atop my bookshelf alongside Devilman Crybaby's Aniplex set and Love Live!'s 9th anniversary set.

On the other, they missed the opportunity to make this my "perfect" set by not including Fly me to the Moon. I understand why, and just losing the ED song wouldn't even be a huge dealbreaker to me, but since that also means the same BGM cues missing from the Netflix audio will be missing here too, I don't want to spend $300 on something that won't be my definitive, go-to version to watch.

I'm currently planning to do what I said I would about a week ago, and just import the JP Blu-ray (I could even add a couple of the Rebuilds and still be paying less), but I'm definitely going to at least buy the standard release for the Netflix dub and a watchable version of End of Eva. The Platinum set will still be my go-to for watching, at least unless I find success in learning Japanese.

If this is true then I think we are going to see a lot of people cancelling their PO in ten days. I think few will be willing to spend 40-60 USD more just for that paperweight and lanyard, hence why I'm thinking the next tier will be a smaller sized box and some postcards.

I figured that be the case. Wouldn't this be one of the first dubs from Netflix to get a home video release? I read stories about other companies redubbing certain shows because they couldn't get the Netflix dubs.
