I avoid trailers whenever I can, but I did see trailers for Reminiscence and The Protégé.

Reminiscence looks deadly dull and self-important. The early reviews are kinda confirming that trailer tone. This is a pass. Maybe even a Redbox pass.

The Protégé looks like the type of standard, average action film that the studios would release back in the January/February dump months era. I'm not opposed to those type of matinee specials (since I only watch matinees, anyway), and the cast is fun. I think I've seen the entire film from the trailer but, eh, it's Maggie Q and Michael Keaton. I'm there.

The Night House. Good reviews. Rebecca Hall. I'm going to see this, even though I fear, from the synopsis, that it's going to be another
[Show spoiler]The Babadook
(which I respected, but also found kinda blah).

I imagine that Free Guy will win the weekend. The Protégé might be a surprise second, only because it looks to be the most accessible of the three films opening. I'd never even heard of The Night House until earlier today. Reminiscence just looks it's so in love with and making out with itself that it won't even notice if anyone even came to the theater to see it.

Reminiscence is actually really good... but yeah, it's gonna bomb hard. It's very Dark City meets Inception with a dash or two of Eternal Sunshine & Blade Runner 2049. I liked it a lot, but I can totally see the general audience checking their phones halfway thru, if they even bother to see it. Makes the most of its $70 million budget, and nicely directed, but it just ain't gonna connect with Joe Average. Very "serious", too: can't recall a single laugh or light moment in the entire movie. People slam the MCU for being too "jokey", but those fun moments are what helps the audience connect with the characters, feel like you know them. None of that here; it's basically a high tech, high budget film noir. Recommended, but only for the right audience.

Yeah, no serious movie ever made money.

Wait...The Exorcist's adjusted for inflation gross would be over $1 billion? Oh yeah.

Marvel invented humor too, apparently.

Didn't say anything like that, and you know it. I was comparing it to movies actually in the current marketplace. If you have to dredge up a fifty year old movie to make your point...

You mentioned the MCU. That is it's trigger acronym. Just like Bucky. Ready to rant.

Such is the current state of popular cinema. 30-50 years ago we had the likes of The Exorcist, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Unforgiven etc. has the big populist "serious" cinema, along with genre cinema that was meaningful like Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Terminator 2, Alien, etc. that broke new boundaries. Films of personal artistic expression that took their characters and stories seriously and told them purposefully. Now, we have MCU Part 25 1/2.

If Reminiscence opens to more than 10 million I'll be shocked.

I was right, Free Guy easily repeats.

And aside from PAW Patrol, none of the newcomers even made it in the top 5.

Reminiscence is going to be another expensive disaster for WB

The Protege: B
Reminiscence: C+
The Night House: C-

The latter 2 got ripped apart as expected.
