I have a ton of Anime DVD's and I noticed that the UB 820 does not play them that well, jagged lines etc.
Does anyone know of a better 4K and or Blu-ray player for DVD upscaling/playback? Without jagged lines etc The player does not have to be 4K capable, looking for affordable options with great DVD playback, a bluray player would be fine. Last edited by King Crimson; 08-20-2021 at 02:39 PM. |

That said, have you played with the 820 image settings specific to DVD playback? The out-of-box settings are indeed sub-standard, however trial and error delivered a much better picture. The modded 3700 is my go-to for DVD and Region B Blu, but the 820 now has a more than acceptable custom setting as an alternate. |

The Sony UBP-X1100ES and the Sony UBP-X800M2 both do a fine job upscaling.

Only the 103 and 105 had a darbee edition. I suggested the 93 (since it's cheaper and does well with upscaling dvd's) PLUS a stand alone darbee unit. I should have made that point clearer. The 93 plus darbee would be cheaper than a 103D (OPPO with built-in darbee processing).
Both can be found in the used market. Edit: I corrected the high end darbee player model number-Thanks Oniiz86. ![]() Last edited by ronboster; 08-20-2021 at 06:20 PM. |

Odd, since Panasonic is one I'd normally recommend as one of the better quality scalers! Though, in truth, they have gone down in my estimations lately due to reports of issues with some discs (the same discs I own). I would have got one tomorrow if my current player died, though I don't think I would now due to the doubts planted. As a rule though, I still think Panasonic are great with scalers.
Sony have been well reviewed on that score as well, like others have already suggested. Generally the "boutique" players are all good choices if you don't mind paying for it. But it could just be burnt into the material you are watching and you'd be wasting money. Have you fiddled with video/film settings in the player and/or TV you are using? Jagged lines being more obvious could be due to interlaced video output. Set to film or auto, real cinema etc. and see if that makes any difference? Personally, I really like how my Oppo203 looks with DVDs. Makes them look better than my Sony Blu-ray player from several years ago (I forget the model but think it was from around 2012) and my LG B8 TV. Last edited by oddbox83; 08-21-2021 at 02:51 PM. |
