Except you get twice the performance with the PS5 SSD. Won’t matter for 3rd party games though. If that’s all I cared about, I’d get an SX over PS5 given the chance. |

But thanks for mentioning capacity sizes advertised on things as a topic to talk about. I bet it would say 825 GB on the back of the PS5. I have the box in storage at the moment so can't check. And it is strange how a 1 TB external HDD packaging can state "1 TB" on it, when it's often much less than that, in the low 900 MB range sometimes. I wonder why they can't fit exactly 1 TB on an external hard drive? I'll have to research it more. Most I could find was something about: Quote:
Apparently computers use some other form of measurement instead of GB or TB. GiB or TiB. So it's apparently actually 1000 MBs but the computer lists it at 931 Gibibytes or something. For example: An actual product's description: Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox: Digital Storage Capacity: 1 TB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Memory Storage Capacity 1 TB Size 1 TB People often assume if you say a box of cereal will have 18 ounces of cereal, the cereal will weigh 18 ounces, not 15 ounces each time it's weighed. Or if you say ounces, then when it's measured in ounces, it will be 18 oz. Rather than using some other form to measure it. Imagine having a 1TB file, and when you buy a 1TB external HDD to store it on, it only allows up to 930 MB's. That's the issue but clearly there's some kind of oversight going on otherwise it would've stopped by now through complaints. ------- Back on topic, when I started my PS5, I do remember seeing 825 GB available space or so, but after updating it in order to be able to play games, that space quickly dropped down to 665 GB of free space or so, which was sort of frustrating to see back then since there was no external HDD drive option back then. |

Just to throw a spanner in the works an SSD in PS5 will actually show you the full storage capacity of the SSD because it reads in decimal bytes which is the unit that manufactures advertise their storage devices. So if you stick a 1TB SSD in a PS5 you will see 1TB as the actual capacity. So the PS5s 825gb SSD is the full size the useable space is a lot less not because it uses binary bytes but because the OS has a lot of space reserved.
Unix and Linux based systems will recognise the 1TB SSD for example as 1TB because they use Decimal Bytes, where as Win OS for example uses Binary Bytes which means a kb is made up of 1,024bytes and a mb is made up of 1,024kb which is why if you look at the storage capacity on a PC for example it’s less than the advertised capacity on the box. |

External SSDs don’t do this. 2TB = 1.84TB I think most people know 825GB is the actual space internally. PS3 had a lot of different memory SKU’s during its generation. Anybody who decided to check in System Settings could easily see that they were not getting the full advertised spec as “usable” storage & I think that’s just what some people have issues with. Even this wouldn’t work as marketing, 825GB 667.2GB Usable Problem here is They’d get in trouble because 667.2GB isn’t the actual usable space in PS5 because they gate GB away from the user to make sure the memory doesn’t get corrupted. Otherwise known to us as the “Other” space when viewing Storage. So basically there isn’t a set in stone # as usable storage. |

Maybe it’s because it’s a direct connection to the MoBo rather than USB connection? I agree that Sony couldn’t advertise the actual usable storage space because it varies for pretty much every user. Even out of the box completely standard the storage space would be different now to at launch because we’ve had a few patches. The “Other” storage really annoys me because from what I can tell it’s only there due to PS4 games needing more space than the actual game file size due to updates. Because they need to copy themselves before reinstalling. So if you install a PS4 game at 50gb you can say goodbye to at least 25-30gb extra to other space. I’ve tried it with loads of PS4 games and the bigger the game install the more you lose from other. And as soon as you uninstall you gain the other space back. Yet another reason to only install PS4 games on an external drive and not the internal. |

What's shocking to me is when you get numbskulls who make it out like a few people in know IRL that are somehow happy to be abused with prices at times. I am holding out till prices dip down. I want a 1TB NVMe and i get it' s new and fancy tech, creme de la creme at present in speed apart from the scummy part changing done post-release that gimped performance. I paid maybe £80 for a 2TB external HDD that contained a 2.5" which i managed to put into my internal on PS4, and that was a long time ago but i'm not going to pay double that for 1TB. Hopefully if the drives drop down over next year, then i'll get one sub-£100 on sale probably but i really want the 2TB. I'm using a 4TB external i switched over from my PS4 but it's not going to be usable for the PS5 games i'll eventually play so i'll have to start managing my storage by playing and deleting a lot quicker.

Is it a substantial amount of local space or essentially just the save files? I thought you were required to have save files locally so if you have a ton of PS4 games on an external that sure can add up locally.

I know all games regardless use Internal storage for saved game data. However if you add a PS4 game to your External, that’ll boost the space in the “Other” section by a few GBs per game added. |

Interesting that GB's worth of info is being stored on PS5 when adding PS4 games to the external SSD if that's the case. I wonder if PS5's "Other" space is somehow storing a portion of the game's data to run potentially better on PS5 in some way.
I believe I remember back in November 2020, when I added Miles Morales and other PS5, PS4 games to the internal PS5, the "other" space also increased a bit. |

The Sony PS5 Showcase will hopefully be Sony's delayed E3 2021 event, since they didn't show up at E3 2021 or Gamescon 2021. Partly because of that, E3 was one of the absolute worst E3's I've ever seen.
The former God of War and Twisted Metal developer, Jaffe, said he found out about a new "traditional" Sony game being developed that will apparently be amazing and revealed soon, but wasn't sure when. Apparently a new Infamous is being developed. Sony Playstation Showcase starts this Thursday, September 9, 2021 at: 1 PM PDT / 9 PM BST |

Favorite games of the PS5 showcase:
Forsaken Square Enix, hopefully fully open world Wolverine Insomniac Spider Man 2 Venom Project Eve Action game Ghost Wire surprisingly looks decent for maybe open world FPS style 2022 for those, hopefully they stay on track. That one island open world game, everyone glides on blankets now since Breath of the Wild. Even in Horizon 2 now. Sony has made missteps, but this show was better than average. Good job. EDIT: Star Wars Old Republic might be a good remake on PS5. God of War 2 looks much like God of War PS4. I'll hold off for now. Alan Wake Remaster for fans of the original will be happy. Gran Turismo 7 looks like the prior games as expected. No bold new features shown. No open city maps to cruise in. And GTAV PS5, is just GTAV PS4 with 4K 60 fps probably and a few new things here and there. Not worth it at all IMO. I expect they'll charge 59.99. Last edited by Zivouhr; 09-09-2021 at 09:12 PM. |

I was going through the settings, not changing anything aside from toggling on one notification setting, and when I switched my profile avatar, not profile picture ('cause for some reason they're different) I no longer have access to my account settings on my PS5. Tried restarting but am afraid to sign out in case it won't let me back in. Kept giving me error "WS-116520-5" which when I googled only came up with a couple posts about Astro's Playroom. I have no idea what's going on or how to fix it.

My PS5 has a glitch last time I tried to play Watch Dogs 1 again after updating the game via PS5 on my external HDD 1. When I tried playing it after an older PS5 update, the game was no longer accessible or visible in the lists, even on my HDD 1. Only when I put the HDD 1 back on my PS4 does it show up. Before, it was appearing and playable on PS5. Not anymore. Glitch. I didn't make it invisible or anything like that. |
