I own the archives box. It's basically the original broadcast of all the episodes. The Blu-rays will use the renewal version.

EDIT: Didn't realize svenge already replied above me lmao

Highly unlikely. When they’re gone, they’re gone. However that does not mean we won’t get another Collector’s Edition in the future. I just wouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon.

We'll "probably" get a steelbook at some point, but judging from how they handled Ghibli releases and Perfect Blue - it won't be for another year or so.

You own the Archives box as well? You really ought to add it to your online collection tracker so that its Blu-ray.com census numbers will effectively be doubled.

Neon Genesis Evangelion OP (Broadcast ver.) - YouTube

NGE Episode 22, "Don't Be" - Elevator Scene Comparison (OA Cut) - YouTube
So for the second video posted. The version on the left is what is included on the archives dvd set and the right side is the renewal version which is used in the platinum sets and blurays?

I just got the standard JP Blu-ray set the other day. Now I gotta look up how to add custom subs to the episodes. Does anyone know where I can find English subs that will match up specifically with the Japanese episodes from this set?

Thank you!! It says that these are digitally restored subs for the VHS episodes. Will these apply to the newer edits on the Japanese blu-rays?

If you could possibly PM me some pictures, I’d like to make some comparisons.
I might send pics when I have time, but my copy has disc 1 in the front of the case, and disc 7 in the back, however disc 4 is on a one-disc "page," while discs 2/3 and 5/6 are on double-disc "pages" (with one disc per side). It looks like there's a missing disc before disc 5, but it's just the back of disc 4's page. Not sure if that helps.

Yeah, my set has a spot for a disc on the back of disc 4’s page. That’s why there is an empty 8th spot. It’s so weird because I’ve been looking through a bunch of photos and they all show the back of the fourth page without a disc holder and the 7th disc in the last spot. It’s just really odd and I wouldn’t have noticed if it didn’t look like I was missing a disc.

Can someone help me out and link to screenshot comparisons between the Renewal/Platinum DVDs and the Blu-rays? I know it was quoted in this thread a long time ago, and I can't find it without looking through over 100+ pages, and I can't find comparisons elsewhere.

I think they pretty much squeezed out as much detail as they could out of the 16mm film.

First disc contains eps 1-6 and is given 43.7 GB of total data | around 39.8GB is used for the video and 3.9GB for the audio. That's around 6.6GB of video and 600MB of audio data on average per episode.

[Show spoiler]

There's hardly any compression to be seen even during fast moving action sequences, the picture remains solid. It's a very clear upgrade from the DVDs which even contain some black crush (in the ninth comparison) I never noticed until now. I have the ADV Platinums for comparison.

When I get a chance, I'll do some comparisons for episode 16 and End of Evangelion.

The upscale looks a bit rough indeed but there are nonetheless some minor improvements in clarity and line detail, and a major one that resolves compression blocking (VERY noticeable in the 4th and 5th bloodbath comparison images).

EoE comps coming soon.

Well, just some preliminary info before I do EoE comparisons.

Jesus H, I knew that the the old flipper Manga DVD had terrible quality but it's been a while since I've viewed it and had forgotten how crappy it truly looks. The aspect ratio (which I'll get into more in a bit) is fubared, gamma is set way too bright, and there is heavy compression among the worst offenders. There is nothing good about this release when it comes to the video quality.

Regarding the aspect ratio, they squeezed the 16:9 image down to 4:3 so 1920x1080 ends up being 1440x1080 surrounded by a thick windowbox:

[Show spoiler]

I used VLC to crop the image to a proper 16:9 ratio greatly reducing the windowbox but the ensuing larger image reveals the flaws of the DVD encode that much more:

[Show spoiler]

For aspect ratio accuracy, I'll be using cropped images of the Mangle DVD to compare with the JP BD. It's gonna be a bloodbath.

And when put up against the JP BD, it's like David vs Goliath only this time David has no chance in hell of winning. I don't even need to go into nerdy detail, just look at that difference. INCREDIBLE:

Wish I had a better version to compare but the crappy manga disc is all I have access to.

Thank you so much. I actually think the Platinum DVDs hold up pretty well to the Blu-ray (it looks like they're from the same master). The Blu-rays are a clear upgrade, but the DVDs still look great. Most of the episode 16 shots don't look much different at all. Of course the Manga End of Eva DVD looks like hot garbage.

The Manga EoE disc is really bad. Same master as the amazing Japanese CAV Laserdisc box set, but because LD is analog, macroblocking and other compression issues don't exist, and it appears that Manga filtered the master with edge enhancement not on the Laserdisc to make it "look better," but ended up making things worse.

Honestly, I can't think of a single US Manga DVD that looked "good." Ninja Scroll, Street Fighter II, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, End of Evangelion... they all looked bad.

I own the old Ghost in the Shell DVD, looked fine the last time I watched it (about a year or two ago maybe, it’s been ages)
