I use the word "steelbook" pretty broadly, it could be a metalpak.

I could envision a subsequent 11-disc set with 3x SteelBooks (each containing a maximum of 4 discs apiece) in the following configuration:
  • Discs 1-4 (TV series w/ "official" dub)
  • Discs 7-10 (TV series w/ "classic" dub)
  • Discs 5, 6, and 11 (both Death[True]² + EoE movie discs with the different dubs, plus the bonus disc containing the "Video Format" version of EoE)
Of course that doesn't match up with the configuration in the Collectors Edition's plastic cases, which based on the spines' text is as follows:
  • 01: "Series and Movies" (presumably Discs 1-5)
  • 02: "Bonus: Series and Movies - Classic Version" (presumably Discs 7-11)
  • 00: "Additional Bonus" (presumably Disc 6)
But then again plastic cases are much more versatile as compared to SteelBooks in terms of how many discs can be contained therein.

Yeah, while I'm a little nostalgic for the old ADV dub, I just can't justify spending close to x6 the money for it. (Especially since I'm mainly a sub watcher.)

The standard edition will be my sku of choice. (Only $38 on Best Buy right now.)

/cheers that it's finally happening.

The only reason some people don't like the adv dub is cause it's hammy and over the top, correct?

The standard edition is a huge win.
At $37.99 it really is an absolute steal. Got me considering cancelling my CE pre-order at that price. Seeing as I don't care about the ADV dub I'm seriously considering it. It'd suck going from the Netflix dub of the series to the original VAs when I want to watch the Rebuild films. Unless I watch subbed, which I rarely do.

Another reason why it might be a good choice to go with the standard edition is that there is undoubtedly going to be more collector releases for NGE in the future, just like there has been for Cowboy Bebop. Or Fullmetal Alchemist. Neither of these CE or UE's are blowing anyone's socks off and there is no doubt in my mind that there will be additional highly desirable collections released sometime down the road. Now that it's finally been licensed and made, the sky's the limit. It may be smart to grab the SE just for now, especially if you aren't moved by either expensive edition. Then the choice is clear.

$37 SE is a win.

Yeah, as someone who watched the series subbed and only heard snippets from the dubs, so I have no attachment to either, I honestly prefer the Netflix version (from the small bits I've heard). Mostly due to Shinji's voice. I don't mind Spike Spencer in Bleach or Code Geass, but idk wtf he was doing as Shinji, I just can't take it seriously.

I'm pretty sure the only people that prefer the ADV version are just people that saw that first and that's it. Which is a valid reason, it can be pretty jarring when a character you know suddenly has a different voice.

But I think people should stop calling ADV the best or better dub and just call it the one they prefer, everyone has different tastes, so one can't be definitively "the best", it just depends on who you're asking.

And people talking about authenticity or whatever, from what I've heard ADV took a lot of liberties when dubbing the series, they didn't pay much for it and no one knew how big it would get. Khara was a lot more involved with the netflix version, so whether you think some of the translations are a a bit too clunky or literal, that is technically the most authentic version according to them.

This is my sub watcher perspective anyway, feel free to ignore.

Perfectly sums up exactly how I feel about the Netflix vs ADV debate. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Stephanie McKeon is my preferred Asuka, same with Casey Mongillo as Shinji.

But we can all agree that the Amazon dub is our unpreferred dub, right?

It's the dub for the Rebuild movies available on Prime Video, which useful largely a different cast from the Funimation releases (1 - 3, anyway).

Pre-Ordered the Standard Edition on Best Buy, thankfully my lack of action got me an absolute steal! I have some grievances with GKids decisions, but at this price point, I have no complaints.
I watched Eva subbed and will continue to do so, but for dubs I prefer ADV's dub for the more expressive acting even if it's more cheesy/bad if anything. Sucks its not on it, but with ADV's lawsuit with Gainax for the Live Action movie, they must ask a high price to reuse it out of pettiness. Nothing personal to the cast from VSI, I just don't like how they're directed, accuracy be damned. Which is a shame, it had potential to be the best one but the director must've played it safe, especially with Khara's current relationship with English distributors/Collaborators with severe micromanagement.

My first experience with Eva was the first two Rebuild movies with the FUNi dub, but my first experience with the TV series was the Netflix dub, and I honestly thought it was a chore to watch, and I couldn't finish it (I got to episode 14 IIRC). I rewatched it with the ADV dub, and enjoyed it so much more. I still prefer Casey Mongillo as Shinji, and also prefer the Netflix voices for the supporting characters (Ritsuko, Toji, Kensuke, etc), but I overall thought the ADV dub was more engaging, easier to comprehend, and the characters seemed to come alive in a more distinctive way. Spike Spencer does have an odd, forced voice for Shinji, but I think he gets better as the show goes along, and I got very used to him. Also, Allison Keith's Misato is one of my favorite anime dub performances of all time.

It's a shame ADV didn't redub Eva from scratch in 2004 like they originally planned because that would've been the best one.

It was crazy to learn that adv was a newcomer and struck gold with Eva even though when they got it originally, it wasn't the juggernaut that it would become. Aren't the Netflix dub voices more in line with the Japanese performances and serious? Not hammy at all.

The real shame is that you guys still watch dubbed anime and not subbed like the adults you are supposed to be.

In 2019, Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and Aniplex merged SPT's Funimation with Aniplex's Madman Anime and Wakanim, unifying all of Sony's anime distribution outside of Asia under Funimation Global Group (which SPT and Aniplex jointly own). This allows Funimation to acquire anime titles for all of the regions where Funimation/Wakanim/Madman operate in. Crunchyroll is now part of Funimation Global Group.

Aniplex of America has remain separate from Funimation Global Group, although many Aniplex of America titles have since been exclusively licensed to Funimation Global Group (along with many other Aniplex titles not managed by Aniplex of America). So Sony is largely unified on the overseas anime licensing and distribution front.

Despite the recent shutdown of AnimeLab in favor of expanding Funimation's service back into AU/NZ, Madman Anime still has the ability to license titles that are licensed to other distributors in North America and the British Isles, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion.
