did you watch it all the way from the beginning or start at the specific point in which it froze upon your first watch?

I started about 10 minutes into the movie since I had meant to do it earlier but had to do something else and just resumed from where it stopped.

that could be why it did freeze. i remember watching invisible man (the new one) and gemini man and both froze, when i tried again with those two movies, they didnt freeze at all, in the same spot that they did before. i started them roughly before the freeze spot of the first watch.

now, on the other hand, i watched godzilla king of the monsters and it froze near the end as well. when i watched it a second time, from the beginning of the film, there was no freeze at all.

i have heard reports of a small layer of some sort of film on 4k, which could cause freezing upon first play. the second play, from beginning is fine because the film layer is worn off during the first play. i have also heard that cleaning the disc before a first play could prevent freezing.

What? Do you think the laser burns it off during the first play.
The cleaning thing has never worked on any BD100 disk for me and I think is a red herring. The problem with disks freezing approx two thirds through, is a third layer change thing I believe to be related to over heating (on my player). All other discs play fine. YMMV.

Guys. A question... Was the Video Settings [Direct-Auto-Costume1-Costume2] already there for 4K UHD discs before the recent update?

It puzzles me that nobody talks about those settings in the player. In Costume 1 or 2 the contrast slider is basically a tone mapping tool, and not a bad one really.

Yes, Custom 1 and 2 have always been there.

If you were to have a Sony TV you'd see that the contrast setting does a very similar thing: lower it and it'll bring back highlight detail but it will reduce overall brightness. Raise it and you'll clip detail but retain the proper brightness.

Exactly. Which in HDR content could be useful, at least on a projector with movies hard to tone map like King Kong (2005). A couple of notches helps a lot. Kind of the how the dynamic range of the Panasonic player works.

The trouble with those Video settings is that some of them introduce automated DNR into the mix. Direct is the one to go for unless you're actually needing to compensate for tone-mapping issues.

Pretty sure that Custom also turns it off, but yes, unless one needs to fiddle then for ease of use it's best to just go Direct.

A bit late as I have not watched anything on my player for a while. But I was surprised to see an update.

According to Sony’s site it’s just for: Improves the ability to play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

I was thinking of getting this player or the Panasonic UB420K. I don't have any 4k movies, but a 4k tv and I mainly want something that will upscale my dvds and blu-rays. Or does the tv do the upscaling for me?

You usually want the TV to be doing the upscaling (which is the default) unless it is particularly bad at it.

When you're on the home screen and have a disc inserted, is there any function to have it show a jacket or cover instead of just being a square with a disc in it?

Really annoying when you play a CD and none of the tracks have names.

Welp, I just experienced my first freezing since the software update last night! I was really hoping that it was gone, but there it was again.

I don’t really know what it is wrong with these players anymore. Oh well, it only happens every once a while, so I guess I’ll just give it a pass (nothing’s perfect in the world of physical media nowadays).

The only thing that works every time is to just eject the disc, then put it back in. The freeze won’t happen again, at least for a while.

All 4K TVs upscale SD and HD content by default. It has to do that in order to fill the screen, otherwise you'd have a little window in the corner and the rest of the screen would be black.
