Check to see if changing the HDMI Audio Format helps, you've got Auto, PCM and Bitstream options. |

It definitely seems apparent with Panasonic what happens from a lack or less competition. Oppo surely would have kept Panasonic on their heels a lot more, but then Oppo also left for a reason.

Sadly UHD players aren’t high priority for CE manufacturers due to the continuing disc market contraction.
I have both the UB820 and UB9000. Really like them especially the 9000 but the days of these high quality players are short numbered. Thinking of picking up a second UB9000 before Panasonic officially shuts down production. |

They are big in China. 23% market share Q1 of this year. Making it the one of the most popular brand in China. Who needs to make 4K players when you have 1.4 billion consumers wanting cell phones.

Ironically, OPPO still is the company to beat regarding CS. A friend called me desperately on Friday to let me know that his Denon X4400H shorted out when he was moving tables and even smoke came out of it. I told him to count it as a lost so immediately he went to Best Buy and got a Denon X4700H that was in stock as replacement. He plugged everything into his new receiver just to find out the bad news, his OPPO 203 got hit by the electrical shot and it wasn't working. Pressing the Power makes the disc tray come out then immediately goes in and turn OFF. He thought about taking it to a local repair shop to see if it was fixable but yesterday I recall seeing something at OPPO website about repairs so I went into OPPO website and found that they still service OPPO 203s for a flat rate of $109 + shipping. So told him to contact OPPO, which he did last night. This morning as soon he wakes up, an email from OPPO with an RMA number in his inbox. Long story short, in less than 12 hours, OPPO came back to him with a RMA, he paid the $109 online and the 203 is on the way to CA for repair. That GREAT is OPPO. 3 years after going out of business and still they take care of their customers. We most definitely need OPPO back.

The Pannys like to present mono in a 5.1 container for some reason. What does the player’s info screen say, and how have you got its audio output set up? Bitstream or PCM? And is secondary audio on or off? Yes….questions

Weirdly this only happens if you send audio and video via the one HDMI. If you use both HDMI slots, the second being for audio only, the Panny will send mono as 1.0, stereo as 2.0 etc, instead of everything in a 5.1 container.

Thanks for that. I'm guessing that if it's using one output it thinks "I'm connected to a teevee!" so it squirts everything out as 5.1 to make it more compatible? Though Vriess' complaint isn't the first I've heard of someone having trouble with how the Pannys output mono in 5.1.

Discs do look better on it but there is such a performance gap between the two players that, unless it's a strong HDR movie like Pacific Rim, that's it's not worth the trouble (but then again I haven't been watching that many 4K movies lately either). |

But the auto shutoff is the bigger deal for me. Also, it's irritating that I can't view the time elapsed/remaining on my display. Even a cheap player will offer that. Agree with the comment above that Panasonic simply doesn't care. |
