Thank you. That's sincerely very kind of you to say.

I am on meds, as well as going to therapy regularly. I pray for the day that I'm "normal", whatever that means...Anyway, enough about that, lets get back on topic.

Of the four upcoming UHDs, I have watched all of these films, except for Citizen Kane.

Truth be told, I have kind of avoided Kane simply because it tops a lot of critics' lists as the greatest film of all time, and I am afraid that it won't live up to the hype, or that I would somehow be disappointed in it. Also, it's a bummer that I already know what "Rosebud" is referencing, so that's kinda frustrating.

None of that tempers my excitement for this release, however. If I've waited this long to see Citizen Kane, it may as well be on the best format available, and from a studio known for its quality home video releases.

Yeah, I picked it because I was excited about Criterion moving to UHD, and because it was the first film they released altogether. I think it's great that they chose it to be a "launch title" for the format. I found the idea to be poetic, in an odd way.

And, of course, so I can open myself up to some fun ribbing on the forum.

Technically Mulholland Drive 4K comes out a week before Citizen Kane.

I can imagine someone not liking KANE after all is said and done, but being disappointed in it after all the hype? I wouldn't think so. Maybe that's just semantics, but to me those are two different things. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed and thinking it was not something special, even if you wind up not caring for it.

Also, I don't think knowing the ending will adversely affect your viewing. I didn't know it when I first saw the film as a teenager and I sat there dumbfounded by the surprise or whatever you want to call it. I had no idea what the hell that revelation at the end even meant. If anything, it may make a first time viewing more profound.

I think you should definitely get it in 4K and watch it under the most optimum conditions possible. Then on the rare chance you are disappointed, at least the overall impact of the visual and audio brilliance of it still has a chance to live up to all the hype. Please come back here afterwards with your thoughts!

Mulholland Drive is such a great film. I have gotta say that the dumpster scene scares my pants off, just thinking about it.

Lynch is so good at conjuring up the feeling of being trapped in a surreal nightmare. It's almost uncanny how he can create such an overwhelming sense of dread in otherwise "routine" types of situations, or even conversations between two characters.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I am planning to pick up all of the Criterion UHDs in the next sale (provided that they're all available then), and Kane will definitely be at the top of my watch list.

That dumpster scene still freaks me out. When I first saw it I literally jumped. Then I showed it to my dad later that day and then again to pause and actually look close up.

I suspect those who saw Kane and thought it was overrated treated it like they're being told to read Beowulf in high school. Then they go into the viewing looking for faults.

It's a terrific film and a lot of fun.

That's a good point. Films aren't homework, but I do like to study them from time to time.

Meaning, I will re-watch some favorites multiple times, to analyze them. I like to call it doing a "deep dive". Generally, I like do this for titles that aren't straight ahead in their storytelling, or even some that I just really enjoy watching.

I end up being that weird guy who uses quotes from movies in real life.

The best is quoting Animal House around people that haven't seen the movie.

That being said, if you don't know what film noir or the French New Wave is, people won't fully grasp Pulp Fiction

Excellent point. I agree that there are films that become more enjoyable, if you have a certain understanding/knowledge going in.

In my opinion (and others may disagree), this is decidedly true when it comes to directors. I have found that some films “resonate” (for lack of a better word) more, if you’re familiar with the director’s previous works.

I also like to account for the time the film was made, and what the moviegoing landscape was like at the time.

As such, something like Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, is something of a masterpiece, IMO. I can watch it, and be in awe of the innovation on display. It’s also fun to count the endless slew of later films that were clearly influenced by it, or outright borrow ideas from it.

I used to have the Kino BD with the restoration done by the F.W. Murnau foundation (if my memory serves me correctly) and I’m hoping they release a 4k of that glorious restoration.

I would also like to see Criterion release a 4k of M. I was kinda surprised about the subject matter in there. It seemed quite risqué for the time period. Although, Peter Lorre (perfectly cast) plays a child murderer, something much more sinister is also suggested.

My apologies for the long tangent, it’s just where my brain went. Lol!

First time I tried to watch it, it was streaming somewhere and I put it on, in the dark, around 1 in the morning. Got to that scene and it creeped me out so bad, I shut it off and didn't return to the film for a week or so. I love it.

The Film Forum just put out their newest schedule. As far as Criterion / Janus stuff goes, they'll be showing the Iranian film Chess of the Wind (1976) from Oct 29 - Nov 11. Likely a Blu-ray (and maybe UHD) release to follow.

The stills shown on Janus' page are beautiful. The premise sounds great too. Really looking forward to seeing this one

John Waters has his Camp John Waters event every year and everyone was “sworn to secrecy” about upcoming projects he talked about but someone confirmed with a flamingo emoji in a Criterion Facebook group that Criterion are definitely doing Pink Flamingos. I know there was initial talk of Warner doing it themselves and then talk of Criterion, but this helped to solidify it getting the big C on the cover.

I’d be down for that (in 4K please!) and Inland Empire getting announced tomorrow!

So, I just recently got HBO Max, and while digging around to see what they have available for viewing, I noticed there are quite a few films that are in the Criterion collection.

I decided to watch John Waters' Multiple Maniacs today. This was my first time seeing it, and I wasn't prepared.

I have seen some of his more mainstream stuff, but not his early works. This really does fall into the category of "campy trash", IMO. Although, I'm not necessarily certain if I feel that is an insult, or a compliment. I'm sure Mr. Waters himself, would be delighted to see that label attached to one of his films.

I'll be blunt here, and say that some viewers may get the feeling that the sole intention of the film really is to disgust and repulse the viewing audience, as alluded to in the opening sequence. However, that isn't entirely true, as there's some pointed political and social barbs along the way. Some of them quite hilarious in their execution, regardless of how you feel about them.

I feel I must applaud him for his gusto, and the grit it must have taken to get this made. I sit in awe of his ability to convince his cast members to take part in his creation. Partly because of the subject matter, partly because it's clear that there is so much of a DIY aesthetic happening, that I often wondered what the actors' motivations were. Not in the traditional sense, of character motivation, but personal motivation. As in, why did they agree to take part in this project?

That may come off as a negative, but truly, I mean that as a high compliment. The reason, I feel, is because they believed in Johns' vision. They understood that they weren't making Citizen Kane, but that didn't matter to them. It was obviously a labor of love. Something they wanted to do for a friend, and that's commendable. It does appear that everyone involved is having a lot of fun, and that's probably enough motivation for most people. I know it would be for myself.

I see it Multiple Maniacs as a genuine "you must see it to believe it" type of thing. At times funny, crass, vulgar, nonsensical, or offensive, but always highly engaging and very entertaining.

I don't know if I thought it was a "fun ride" throughout, but I am now really hoping Criterion gives this a 4k disc release, so I can snap it up and share it with anyone I can convince to watch it with me.

This is not for squeamish viewers, or those that without a dark sense of humor, but for all others...you must see it to believe it.

I'll give Multiple Maniacs 3.75/5 stars. It's not executed with the utmost technical prowess, and not everything worked for me, but what is here is something to behold.

Depends on what you think "Rosebud" is referencing, because it's far more than a sled.
