While most casual viewers are not privy to audio details and stuff. They can sense something is "off" and not know what that is, and assume it's just the movie not working for them. But, put it on with the original mix and suddenly they might have a different reaction to the movie.

This movie was never about gore and the body count. It's all about suspense and terror, building up tension and atmosphere. Nothing more. Nothing less. Destroy the audio mix, and you destroy the film's intent.

So it's no surprise people wouldn't find it as intense/scary with the neutered audio tracks that have been available all these years. And most people are ignorant and don't understand this stuff, and thus will just spread the word the movie is "Cheesy/not scary/lame/tame/dated".

Some reaction videos watching the movie with friends/non-horror fans with the Criterion mono mix would be a fun idea, just to gauge how some people react to certain scenes and such.

I just want to make sure I completely understand what I'm reading.

People are arguing whether or not the updated sound mix is affecting the perception of a 43 year-old horror movie. Is that correct?

I'm at a loss.

You should try lossless audio. You’d understand the discussion better.

Correct, same as how we are arguing that the color grading needs to look exactly like Illinois in Autumn to get the full impact of the film.

Well it's one important part of a movie. So it sounding lifeless and dull is sure to impact a persons feelings about the movie. If the original mix was intact all along and the only version released, and people found the movie less frightening etc today. Then, you'd be onto something.

Well, OF COURSE it does. After all, that's how it looked in theaters when it was released. It was over 40 years ago and I was five, but I remember exactly how it looked.

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t agree. I really, really don’t think that a couple of sound effects in the remix or the lack of fidelity in the 2014 mono would effect someone’s viewing that much. I’ve seen the film theatrically a few times, most recently in 2018 a few weeks before the release of the latest film with an audience of mostly younger people. That time, it was a DCP of the 35th Anniversary transfer with the remix and the audience still loved it.

...well to be fair they probably love listening to music on spotify over bluetooth on apple airpods pro and don't feel they're missing out

it's a vintage John Carpenter movie and pretty much all his movies have achieved cult status. The audience was there no doubt specifically to witness this. Clearly the audio fidelity is not going to be a dealbreaker under most circumstances but particularly not under those conditions.. unless there was no audio or very out of sync audio (or whisper quiet low audio, really ear splittingly loud audio, audio with interference all over it or if it was the Chinese dub or something)

I'm gonna agree with you here. The average movie goer is not that precious. A lot of folks on here are very precious, because well, they're collectors. That said, whenever someone on here attempts to delve into the psyche of the average movie theater goer and how they interpret their viewing experience... they rarely get it right. I would even argue that some home media collector's aren't even that precious about what a given release retains from previous formats/editions/etc etc. They just like to have the movie in whatever form that can get their hands on. I saw the same 2018 theatrical rerelease as you and well... the audience did their audience thing. No one cried foul over a certain effect mixing from the mix or the color temperature etc etc. I still found that rerelease showing to be a wonderfully refreshing experience for a movie I've seen countless times on VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray. That said, I do have Halloween I-III on pre-order and can't wait to listen to the mono mix and see the new transfer.

I would only have to fight for the honour of my joke anyway, I most likely would've lost and earned no valour. I don't act so childishly now, I am on my best behaviour.
