Really excited for this release. On a side note, with VR headsets becoming more popular, when do you guys think we will get a 3D release of Evangelion, that takes full advantage of VR headsets like the Oculus Quest?

Not anytime soon if ever. 3D is dead and a full VR remake would be too expensive.

Not many traditional 2d animated stuff ever got converted to 3d, Disney stuff like Little Mermaid, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast being rare examples. Of those 3, only Beast really turned out well in my opinion.

Weren't there 3D One Piece and Toriko movies? No idea if the 3D versions were released on disc in Japan.

Anyway 3D Evangelion is most likely not going to happen. There's more UHD anime releases than there are 3D releases, and UHD is just a few dozen despite the format being 5.5 years old.

The international re-release of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION does not contain "FLY ME TO THE MOON" in any of its home video editions.

Since I'm seeing it: The rights to 'Fly Me To The Moon" cost as much as a house now, per episode. Imagine the total cost, and you'll understand why it was left off the international Eva TV home video release.

Going to explain a bit further since people are getting confused. The rights to songs have been rounded up over the past 25 years and bundled into massive catalogs controlled by record companies as investment vehicles.

These investment vehicles are meant to maximize the value of master recordings and songwriter credits by letting the record companies leverage the demand for licensing, into perpetual income

Where it used to cost at most, $500-1000 per song to license for a TV show, or even lower, the new industry controlled clearing houses are asking 10-50x more, because of the increased demand from licensing. This is why licensinbg Fly Me To The Moon can cost as much as a house.

The One Piece and Toriko movies that had 3D presentations in Japan did get 3D BDs as well. Both were done when Toei as a whole was pushing 3D pretty hard as a number of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai films also had 3D versions around that time. DBZ: Resurrection 'F' also got a 3D version, but I don't recall if there was ever a Japanese disc for the 3D version. It was released with a 3D disc in France and Hong Kong though.

Considering the proliferation of 3D CGI anime now, like GITS:SAC_2045 where an argument could be made that a 3D version is a perfect fit, yet none exists, I think the odds of any old anime, not even just Evangelion, getting a 3D conversion now are about as minimal as they'll get. Even with VR taking off, 3D stuff there is a harder sell due to the entry cost, especially with the lack of BD drives on most PCs, so the cost to do any sort of conversion would almost never be worth it considering the tiny subset of users who might use it. I personally own a Valve Index setup and my VR PC has no optical drive at all because I built it to be compact and had no need for a BD drive when I have a dozen other player options. Even if it did, my VR play space is designed for open space to move around, not for a chair or couch to sit back and watch a movie on. There's a case to be made for the PS4/PS5 and PSVR combo being the most accessible method available for disc-based 3D, but even then, that's getting into little technicalities.

Well, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F also received a 3D Blu-ray in Spain and Germany, in case you're interested.

Spanish: https://www.amazon.es/Dragon-Ball-Z-...dp/B01D3VTGA2/

German: https://www.amazon.de/Dragonball-Res...dp/B01J9JKFGQ/

It's a shame 3D BD died out as it had a lot of potential.

Well, I don't consider Dragonball Z and One Piece as anime - at least anime I would ever go near - so those don't count, lol...

I am a huge fan of 3D, and I still have a fully operational 3D projection theater with over 200 3D movies to watch in my collection, so I do still get to enjoy 3D, at least until my hardware dies.

Whew 170 dollars vs 39 for a cooler box and the original dubs. There's just no way I can rarionalize that, even though I'd like the option of having it. That's just an insane price for that.

Lol... it's just as expensive in Japan, and it was much more expensive when it originally came out on VHS back in the 90's. Hell, buying all of the Platinum singles and art box at MSRP is slightly more expensive than the CE.

Would you rather pay close to $400 for 13 volumes on VHS?

Much as I dislike FUNimation and their milked to death releases of DBZ, they at least haven't pulled this, but it may give them an idea to do it themselves.

Example:
[Show spoiler]
Standard Edition:
- Japanese Audio [Dragon Box]
- FUNimation Dub w/ Original Music
- FUNimation Dub w/US Music

Limited Edition
- Japanese Audio [Dragon Box]
- Japanese Audio [Broadcast]
- FUNimation Dub w/Original Music [Remastered]
- FUNimation Dub w/US Music [Remastered]
- FUNimation Dub w/US Music [Singles]
- FUNimation Kai Dub (Reworked for DBZ)
- Saban Dub (with Japanese audio for missing scenes)
- Westwood Dub (with Japanese audio for missing scenes)

Well, in this case it would be worth buying though I doubt they'll ever put that much effort into it. They could've made the 30A release amazing and ruined it.

Also even though I'm not a big DBZ fan personally, that's way more episodes when talking about the entire series. 170 for an anime with only like 24 episodes, even if it's a classic like this, is too much.

There are people out there who spend over a thousand every year just to upgrade their iPhone to the latest model, but god forbid someone spends $174 on a collector's set that will stay on your shelf forever.

I would buy a 4k of Eva in a heartbeat, but the odds of that happening besides the rebuilds is pretty slim too, but still tremendously better then a 3d version.

There haven't been that many TV series of any type released on 4K, its just not viable.
