I prefer the 5.1 on Day of the Dead rather than the mono for the same reasons as you and The Fog: the mono is really rather bad, it’s sibilant as hell, and the corrected Arrow 5.1 mix (so the weird overdubs for bad language from the Anchor Bay remix are gone) is a fine alternative, and again it mostly contains OG music and effects. I even downmixed it back into mono just for shits and giggles. If all remixes were like those, and that of Blade Runner Final Cut’s 2007 5.1 mix, i.e. performed with taste and restraint by people who want to respect the original without binning large chunks of it, then I wouldn’t be nearly as vocal about it as I am. But there are so many dodgy remixes that outweigh the respectful ones, if people still think them “BETTER” to their ears then there really is no debating that point; all I wants is the CHOICE, precious. And BTW mine is not an anti-surround or anti-immersive crusade in itself, I miss having surround sound every damned day for the content that was natively mixed as such. (Though even when I had a 7.1 system I still listened to OG mono/matrixed surround via their respective speakers in that system wherever possible.) But while people are patting themselves on the back for scoring such a knockout blow as “you’re not listening to OG audio on new movies then, hur de hur hur”, bear in mind that I never said I was. I don’t “review” modern audio on modern movies for the very reason that I don’t have any kind of exterior sound system any more, so I don’t often comment on it either way, good or bad. Don’t mistake an apathy for remixes as an apathy for surround, but my ears simply cannae take it any more. Tinnitus, long term hearing damage, all caused by 20 years of aural abuse. It’s too much for anything other than an occasional trip to the cinema. But what listening thru TV speakers does not do is magically turn an entirely revisionist remix into the OG, nor is my memory of the OG diminished by said TV speakers, as replaced/botched sound effects are still audible. Replaced/botched dialogue is still audible. Replaced/botched music is still audible. Plus the ol’ memory bank tells me when some or all of those things are missing entirely in whatever scene in a beloved movie. And with a new movie I have no other frame of reference aside from those rare cinema trips so I’m perfickly content to watch them on the TV with everything downmixed into 5.1, so the “OG”dialogue/music/effects are still present, just not in the layout intended. But again: since I got rid of my AVR and speakers two years ago I don’t comment on audio mixes for new films for that reason. Last edited by Geoff D; 09-23-2021 at 11:55 AM. |

i will be interested to see how Halloween translates for me and for others. thankfully there are no helicopters and arctic winds in Halloween for them to mess around with, but it's possible music could still sound a bit weird as it does with the Thing.. possibly because of this wall of sound effect that was mentioned where they spread some of the music to the height channels. Anyway we'll find out soon enough.. which will sound 'better' on modest home setups, the revisionist but immersive atmos mix or the original but filtered mono mix .... surely from a purely sonic perspective the former has an advantage in this case Last edited by vailsy; 09-21-2021 at 03:28 AM. |

But yeah, The Thing is the ultimate example where forcing a modern mix on the consumer is forcing THIS consumer to continue to watch the old Arrow BD, despite the visuals on the new UHD looking stellar. As for Halloween, I've watched it countless times with this so-called "filtered mono" mix, and I'll be very very happy to continue listening to that same mix on the new disc. Halloween's a Top Five title for me; can't wait. Last edited by steel_breeze; 09-21-2021 at 03:47 AM. |

It still baffles me how I'd never heard about this issue before this past month or so. I've been following the Complete Collection thread in the main forum for years and don't recall it ever being brought up there. (I'm sure it has, but it certainly was not with the fervor we've seen here recently.) The fact that the mono gripe appears to be a legitimate one makes it all the more surprising. But I guess when you've only known one version of the mono mix for the past couple of decades, it can be easy to forget that a better one existed -- that is if you ever knew at all.

This is why I'm torn on the Black Christmas disc. The original mono sounds very harsh, with sibilance issues and scratchy sound (the replacement disc is supposed to improve the sibilance issues but not by much to my ears), whereas the surround mix sounds way, way better with no sibilance issues at all and nice, crisp sound - but it includes new sound effects in a number of scenes. And the surround track also falls out of sync later in the film and never recovers, so really the mono is the way to go for that disc, even though it sounds quite rough compared to the sonically superior surround track. But to somebody who has no ties to the original mono track or who hasn't even seen it before, the surround is a much better experience on that disc, which makes the sync issue extra frustrating, as the only alternative is a scratchy mono track.
I'm almost afraid to find out what our choices will end up being with Halloween. |

Going back to original reviews of the 1999 Anchor Bay DVD release they gave that release A's across the board. They never compared it to the Laserdisc, only to the first DVD pressing from 1997 which got panned. It's lucky that a few of us managed to hold on to the Laserdisc release and create comparison videos to show that there is clearly an issue with the source that we have been listening to for all this time. It's amazing how information can be lost to the sands of time. I'm amazed that no one has been complaining about how we are not getting the Extended Cut and the Broadcast TV Cut in 4K. They found all of those reels way back in 1999 and they were confirmed to be shot in Cinemascope. |

I’m looking forward to watching Halloween soon with the unfiltered LaserDisc mono. If this unfiltered mono was on the VHS or TV broadcast, I haven’t heard it in a long, long time.

I could be wrong be I believe Cliff MacMillan confirmed that they weren't able to locate the actual film reels for the TV scenes and were forced to use SD footage. It's most likely that the footage was among those lost when Crest shut its doors.

Will these 4K versions include all the extras from the Complete collection discs ?
It’s a pain storing multiple copies when you have limited space |

I was going to ask the same thing. Will any of these new 4K versions have anything that the complete collection doesn't have except for being in 4K?

The Crest lost content was used more or less as a blanket statement to cover what they may not have found yet. Cliff did a video interview 2 months ago and stated a few points why content may not be on these upcoming releases: 1. They did not get the rights and permission to include specific content. (Criterion commentary audio track confirmed by cmac). 2. Content may have been lost from all of the moving around from company to company. (Halloween 4 Audio Mag tapes confirmed by cmac). 3. They are still actively searching through vaults to try and find content - Cliff mentioned there were 4 vaults including one at UCLA where they found some content, but there is more material at each facility yet to be unearthed. For all we know, the OCN reels of the TV Scenes could still reside at the lock-up storage facility at Trancas International where the elements were originally found.
