Pity its almost certainly the same crappy BD with no alternative soundtrack (which is on the US BD) and missing all the extras of the old 2 disk SE DVD. Same as A Bridge Too Far.

What kind of moron is responsible for that cover artwork?

They have three Spitfires flying inverted over St.Paul's Cathedral, which is apprently located next door to Big Ben and is in the process of being destroyed by bombs from invisible Luftwaffe aircraft

What alternate version of the film or history is this scene supposed to be from?!

Default Unwanted subtitles

Has anyone got the steelbook and watched it? Have they corrected the authoring mistake and removed the subtitles that come up anytime there is on screen text? Or does anybody know of a SKU that has the forced subs that translate the German but doesn't have the TIFFs for the Ehnglish text?

It's nice to have the subs that translate the German but they messed up by putting English TIFFs in too.

The Picture is awesome. Very clear and true to how it should look. The sound is very good too. No DNR as far as I could tell and I used to work in DVD/BD Quality Control.

Well I deliberately purchased the french edition, 'Le Bataille d'Angleterre' around 2 years ago after hearing of the issue you mention. This has the eng language/subs option exactly as the english theatrical (ie no eng subs for eng pub names duh). Still no extras but have slipped the 2nd disc from the 2-disc DVD SE into the BD case, which being french is the slimmer version with the reversed direction spine title

Great film with good transfer and very good 5.1 lossless audio; in the first 10 mins when the ME109's come roaring in, I'm ducking on my couch !

I am assuming the US disc is the same as the UK? A portion of text from the US disc review from this site.

"Now it's on to the problems.

Right off the bat I saw some variation in picture quality between the opening titles, when subtitles were present, and when they weren't. I noticed that resolution dropped which tells me they used a dup for these instances, and the original negative in the absence of titles and subtitles. There is also an occasional image pulsing and some edge enhancement as well. Not one of these issues effected my enjoyment of the film. MGM deserves a lot of credit for getting this films picture quality as good as it is"

Yes the US BD has the same screwed up subtitles as U.K. BD.

However it’s the only BD worldwide with the alternative William Walton soundtrack which is on the 2 disk DVD SEs plus has original English
mono audio.

So you take your choice okay subtitles or the extra audio options.

I've got both.

It was more a query from the previous two folks that I posted the review text. The William Walton isolated soundtrack is a very cool extra to have on disc.

Like A Bridge Too Far, it's worth holding onto the 2 disc UK DVD.

I've always liked BATTLE OF BRITAIN a lot, really a shame they couldn't be bother to put the bonus material on the Blu-ray.

I'm looking forward to this new book about the making of the film:

There was a very good making of book tied in with the original release in 1969 by Leonard Mosley, Battle of Britain The Making of a Film, that's well worth tracking down.

The sound, image and subtitles issues mentioned by the fine gents above, plus the total lack of the, rather interesting, extras on the DVD Special Edition.

William Walton a composer undergoing a welcome retrospective as with Bliss nearly had the entire score removed from the film. The battle scenes for me are incredible in how they were achieved although any aviation expert of the period will recognize the Buchons and CASA 2.111's.

Not entirely: the agreement was that none of the score be used, but they included the Battle in the Air cue for the finale at Olivier's insistence and - only on some prints - part of the Young Siegfrieds theme (despite the title, representing the Allied pilots rather than the Nazis) over the start of the roll call of pilots on the end credits. Although only credited as conductor, Malcolm Arnold was an uncredited collaborator on Walton's score, expanding his themes and sketches.
